Ajax youngster Amourricho van Axel Dongen has hinted that he may be tempted to follow Erik ten Hag to Manchester United at some stage in the future.
Ten Hag is now in the Old Trafford hotseat after being charged with the task of bringing back the good times. After a shaky start, it appears as though the Dutchman’s message is finally getting through. Four straight top-flight victories sees the Red Devils fifth in the standings.
And, while a title challenge seems unlikely, there is clearly now more cohesion in the ranks. It always seemed likely that Ten Hag would turn to his former club when recruiting this summer.
And he raided Ajax twice, with Lisandro Martinez and Antony making the switch from Johan Cruyff Arena to the Theatre of Dreams.
He also brought in Tyrell Malacia from Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord while Casemiro arrived from Real Madrid. Ten Hag handed Van Axel Dongen, 17, his first-team debut last term.
And the talented starlet will not forget the 52-year-old’s impact on his career.
“I will remain eternally grateful to him for giving me the opportunity as a young player to play football with players like Antony and Dusan Tadic,” he told Voetbal Zone.
“And I think it’s great to see that things are going a bit better with Manchester United; I really wish him that.”
Van Axel Dongen already turning heads
Van Axel Dongen sprung to the attention of a few clubs in the summer of 2020. Chelsea were said to be at the front of the queue for his signature at the time.
Both Manchester City and Manchester United were mentioned in connection with the talent. It remains to be seen what happens in the future.
The starlet is currently eyeing a new deal with the Amsterdam giants. But he suggested a reunion with the former Ajax chief could be on the cards.
“Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to speak to him [Ten Hag] since his transfer to United, but who knows, our paths may cross in the future,” he added. “To be honest, I am not currently in the process of renewing my contract.
“For now I will focus completely on staying fit and playing and see what comes my way. Talks are not underway yet, but they could always be.”
Ten Hag has been credited with bringing through a number of youngsters while he was at Ajax. And it is no wonder that players want to work with him.
For now, the task is to build on the upturn in form, with Leeds United set to visit Old Trafford next Sunday. Before then, United are in Europa League action when they head to Moldova to face Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday.
The north-west outfit lost 1-0 to Real Sociedad in their group opener earlier this week.
