Erik ten Hag is unlikely to ever select a player for Manchester United ever again in the wake of a woefully poor outing for the Red Devils over the weekend, according to a football analyst.
Ten Hag was appointed United manager over the summer as a permanent successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Between the Norwegian’s sacking and the hiring of the Dutchman, German Ralf Rangnick has taken charge on an interim basis.
Ten Hag enjoyed great success with Ajax during his five and a half season in charge, winning the Eredivisie title on three occasions. He also steered the Amsterdammers into the Champions League semi-finals, with only a late collapse to Tottenham denying them a final berth.
During his time in charge at Ajax, Ten Hag developed a fearsome reputation for taken no prisoners and doing things his way. In that regard, he has drawn comparisons to the managerial style employed by the greatest of them all, Sir Alex Ferguson.
That determination and steely grit will undoubtedly serve him well. And just a few months into his reign at Old Trafford, hopes are growing for a successful season.
The immediate aim for the Red Devils will be to secure a place in the top four. United currently sit in fifth, with seven wins and four defeats from their 14 games played so far.
However, United missed the opportunity to move into the top four over the weekend following a disappointing 3-1 setback at Aston Villa.
The result came as a surprise to many with one United star turning in his worst performance since signing.
Another surprise before the match kicked off was the inclusion of Donny van de Beek in the United line-up.
The star has endured a miserable time at Old Trafford, being loaned out to Everton last season.
Ten Hag comes to brutal Donny van de Beel verdict
The appointment of his former Ajax mentor, Ten Hag, however, was supposed to mark a new dawn for Van de Beek. Indeed, the newly-appointed United manager made a public vow to hand the Netherlands international chances to impress over the season.
However, Van de Beek failed to make the most of his opportunity when it came his way on Sunday. He put in a poor performance as Villa claimed an all-too-easy three points. And it was no surprise to see Van de Beek hooked after just 65 minutes.
Now, Dutch analyst Johan Derksen reckons the player’s latest performance is likely to be his last in a United shirt.
“I was watching Aston Villa v Manchester United and then Erik ten Hag made a big mistake by putting [Christian] Eriksen and Donny van de Beek in midfield together,” Derksen told Vandaag Inside.
“Eriksen may have played a nice pass and done nothing else, but Donny van de Beek delivered a poor performance. He had no input whatsoever. He walked all over the pitch and was substituted.
“They went under because of players who can only do something with the ball.”
Star’s time is surely up at Manchester United
Discussing if Van de Beek will get further chances to impress, Derksen delivered the most brutal of verdicts.
“It’s over for van de Beek, who Ten Hag will never give another to chance now. He [Van de Beek] has obviously let him down tremendously.”
Van de Beek has struggled since signing for United for an initial £35m. Indeed, the game at Villa Park was his first Premier League start for the Red Devils in some 701 days.
His lack of impact on the day was befitting of his United career. He has the grand total of just two goals and one assist since signing. And it would come as no shock were they to allow him to leave for a cut-price fee in January.
