Antonio Rudiger ‘would like to talk’ with next Man Utd manager as waiting game takes new twist

Antonio Rudiger is hoping to wait for talks with the next Manchester United manager before making a decision about his future, one of his compatriots claims.

Rudiger is due to become a free agent in the summer when his contract with Chelsea expires. During five years at Stamford Bridge, he has emerged as one of the leading centre-backs in the Premier League.

Therefore, the chance to sign him without a transfer fee is appealing, even if any acquisition would require giving him a large signing-on bonus.

The Germany international was closely linked with a return to Italy to join Juventus recently. But talk of a pre-agreement may have been somewhat premature.

Reports since have indicated that a number of other clubs remain in the running, including Man Utd. They could be looking for an upgrade on Harry Maguire, who has not led by example this season.

Rudiger has a fan in Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to become an advisor to the club after his spell as interim manager ends.

But uncertainty over his permanent successor’s identity is delaying Rudiger’s deliberation of a move to Man Utd, according to German reporter Christian Falk.

Falk tweeted: “A decision about a future of Toni Rudiger at Man Utd is difficult. Rudiger would like to talk with the new coach before.”

At present, there is no clarity over who the next manager will be. United have interviewed Erik ten Hag, who is one of four front-runners for the job. The others are Mauricio Pochettino, Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique.

Each would bring their own style of play and, consequently, thoughts on how Rudiger would fit within that. The 29-year-old has proven his ability at the top level and in various systems.

Chelsea are unable to extend his contract until a change in their ownership. Therefore, he could be considering his options away from Stamford Bridge.

A move to Man Utd would keep him in the Premier League, but it is not something he is ready to commit to just yet.

From Falk’s claims, though, it is clear that he is considering Man Utd as a potential next destination, depending on certain factors.
