Man Utd test Ajax patience with curious first Antony bid, though agents give Ten Hag a helping hand

Ajax winger Antony

Man Utd have tabled their first bid to sign Ajax winger Antony, and their efforts are being aided by the Brazilian’s agents, per a report.

The Red Devils are known to be on the hunt for a versatile, wide forward this summer. 22-year-old Antony has drawn persistent links with Manchester United and the Brazilian is reportedly the man Erik ten Hag wants if Cristiano Ronaldo departs.

Ronaldo is a central striker, while Antony predominantly plays out wide. That would suggest either Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial could assume the central role if the Portuguese icon does depart. Edisnon Cavani has left as a free agent.

Recent reports have suggested United are prepared to bide their time over an Antony deal. However, according to Goal, United have decided there’s no time like the present.

The online outlet state Manchester United have ‘offered £51m to Ajax to sign Antony’.

While that is not an insignificant sum, it falls well below the Dutch club’s reported £69m valuation.

The report reaffirms Ajax are holding out for far more than United have offered. They have already lost Ryan Gravenberch among others this summer and Lisandro Martinez remains a key target for both United and Arsenal.

Antony agents pressuring Ajax

The Amsterdam club do not wish to see their side gutted entirely. As such, they feel they’re in a strong enough position with the outgoings they’ve already made to stand firm on Antony’s valuation.

However, potentially aiding Man Utd’s cause are Antony’s agents.

The report adds Antony’s representatives have been in Europe since the end of the season with the express aim of securing a blockbuster move. What’s more, Antony’s camp are reportedly ‘pressing’ Ajax to ‘accept a lower offer’ from United.

Man Utd window heating up

From the player’s end, Antony is reportedly keen to join the Red Devils. Whether a move comes to fruition, only time will tell, but United are finally making progress on other fronts.

Tyrell Malacia has completed his move from Feyenoord for an initial £13m. Elsewhere, Lisandro Martinez remains a top target at the back despite fierce competition from Arsenal.

Christian Eriksen has verbally agreed to join Man Utd after choosing the Red Devils over Brentford. The highest profile target – Frenkie de Jong – is still eluding Ten Hag. However, United won’t abandon that chase any time soon.

Vital funds are also beginning to make their way into Ten Hag’s transfer kitty via player sales.

Andreas Pereira is one of seven United are willing to axe and is on the cusp of joining Fulham for an initial £10m. Fabrizio Romano reported a medical is due to take place in London on Thursday.
