Manchester United officials are travelling to Amsterdam on Tuesday to seal a transfer for Ajax winger Antony, according to a report.
The Red Devils are looking to bounce back this summer following a dismal 2021/22 campaign. While they have ambitions to enjoy a strong first transfer window under new manager Erik ten Hag, they have been slow out of the starting blocks.
Indeed, Liverpool and Manchester City have already announced the arrivals of top new strikers.
Man Utd were also keen on new Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez, but did not want to get into a bidding war.
Nevertheless, Brazilian winger Antony was another top target for Ten Hag, following the pair’s relationship at Ajax.
And according to The Sun, United are now closing in on the signing of the 22-year-old for £40million.
Old Trafford officials will be in Amsterdam on Tuesday to finalise a deal for Antony.
The six-cap Brazil international has a strong bond with Ten Hag and posted a farewell message to his manager as he left Ajax.
Antony said: “I want to wish you all the best at your new club, I also want to thank you for everything you taught me.
“I am thankful all the opportunities and learning every day. “Know that I will always stand with you if you need me.”
Man Utd hope Antony the first of many
The Sun further claims in its report that Ten Hag wants as many as five new signings in his first summer transfer window as United boss.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, also worked with Ten Hag at Ajax, is a strong target. That deal has hung in the balance for some time, but United remain hopeful.
Man United want Ajax winger Antony
Manchester United are still keen on a deal for Brazilian winger Antony this summer.
Jurrien Timber, a third Ajax player, reportedly fancied the move to Man Utd – until Louis van Gaal stepped in.
The Netherlands boss warned the centre-back of what limited game time at United would do to his chances of featuring at the World Cup in November.
United need first signing
Following the Nunez and Haaland deals, there have been increasing calls for United to get the ball rolling on their summer business.
Antony is an exciting winger who the Red Devils hope can solve their issues on the right of their attack.
Should they get the deal over the line, they can look forward with confidence knowing one signing is already in the bag.
However, there is a lot more work to do, especially in midfield, before Ten Hag can be happy with his team.
