Avram Glazer launches staunch defence of Man Utd ownership in rare interview: ‘We’ve always spent money’
Avram Glazer fully accepted that Manchester United had endured a frustrating season but defended his family’s ownership of the club by insisting: “We’ve always spent the money.”
The Glazers’ leveraged takeover of the club 17 years ago was controversial at the time and they remain unpopular among Old Trafford supporters, with unrest growing following yet another forgettable Premier League campaign.
Protests have already taken place against the Glazers in recent months. And their sixth-placed Premier League finish will not have helped matters.
Indeed, their haul of just 58 points represents their lowest tally in the Premier League era.
In a rare, albeit truncated, interview with Sky Sports, co-chairman Glazer said: “It is a disappointing season.
“It’s a disappointing season for everyone and we’re going to work hard to make next season a better season.”
When pressed on whether United will invest this summer after the arrival of new boss Erik ten Hag, Glazer added: “We’ve always spent the money necessary to buy new players.”
Glazer seemed initially reluctant to speak on camera. However, he did briefly chat while on the move during his appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
He also threw his backing behind new Dutchman Ten Hag, who officially started his reign on Monday.
When asked whether he thinks the former Ajax man will be a success, Glazer responded: “That’s why we hired him, we know he’ll do a great job.”
Ten Hag relishing City, Liverpool challenge
Ten Hag himself believes that United’s time will come again. Indeed, he feels that Manchester City and Liverpool’s dominance cannot go on forever.
“In this moment, I admire them both, Manchester City and Liverpool,” Ten Hag told ESPN.
“They both play really fantastic football, both Liverpool and Man City.
“But you will always see an era can come to an end and I am looking forward to battle with them, and I am sure all the other Premier League clubs will want to do that.
“I’ve already met big coaches and big teams in the Premier League and I know how to deal with that.
“But it’s clear, the Premier League is the biggest league in the world I think and I’m looking forward to battling with them.”
