Benjamin Sesko: John Murtough begins talks with striker’s agent to organise huge Man Utd transfer

Benjamin Sesko of Red Bull Salzburg

Manchester United chief John Murtough has reportedly met with the agent of Red Bull Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko to discuss a move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are in need of a new striker amid the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future. The Portuguese has been rejected by most of Europe’s top clubs, although he does apparently have one offer on the table.

Erik ten Hag has been using Anthony Martial at centre-forward in pre-season. And the Frenchman has done well, registering three goals in four appearances.

But Martial hasn’t been reliable during most of his time at Manchester United and the club could do with bringing in another goalscorer.

They originally set their sights on Brian Brobbey, only for the Dutchman to re-join Ajax instead.

An alternative is Sesko, wh0 is making big strides in the Austrian Bundesliga with Salzburg. During his first full campaign with the club, he managed five goals and three assists in 24 matches.

While that doesn’t sound like the most impressive record, Sesko took his tally up to 10 goals in all competitions by finding the net in Champions League qualifying and in the Austrian cup.

The attacker, who is only 19 years old, has begun the new campaign in style. He has already got on the scoresheet in consecutive 3-0 wins for Salzburg.

Man Utd take next step in Benjamin Sesko pursuit

Last weekend, Fabrizio Romano revealed United are keeping tabs on Sesko’s development. They are apparently ‘well informed’ about him.

Salzburg responded to this news by jokingly setting his price tag at £300million. Though in reality he shouldn’t cost any more than £40m due to his age and relative lack of experience.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United director of football Murtough has spoken with Sesko’s representative, Elvis Basanovic.

They met last Wednesday (July 20) to discuss whether Sesko would be opening to joining Ten Hag’s squad.

Basanovic is attempting to drum up interest in the Slovenia wonderkid and United are one of the clubs plotting a move. Newcastle and Tottenham are the other Premier League teams to hold an interest.

Sesko’s contract at Salzburg runs until June 2026. This means the Austrian outfit don’t have to sell any time soon and can therefore demand a big fee.

They will likely take a similar approach to that of Erling Haaland, who Sesko has been compared with.

Haaland hit 29 goals in just 27 matches for Salzburg before joining Borussia Dortmund in January 2020. Dortmund paid £17m (€20m) for the striker, and Sesko could move to United for a similar fee.

But this is just speculation at the moment, and Sesko’s price tag will rise significantly if a bidding war starts.

In the mean time, the young forward will aim to continue his impressive goalscoring exploits at Salzburg. Doing this will ensure interest in him rises, with top European clubs monitoring his development.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville has hit out at Barcelona again for their treatment of United target Frenkie de Jong.
