Boost for Man Utd as long-term target becomes available, forces Ten Hag decision on Wan-Bissaka

Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong

Manchester United may get the chance to sign Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong in the summer, according to reports.

This is because the German club are lining up a move for Spanish youngster Ivan Fresneda, as they anticipate their key man’s departure.

Frimpong has been on Erik ten Hag’s radar for some time, so this deal seems to have a real chance of happening if the Red Devils do decide to table an offer.

This is according to German outlet Kicker,  who claim that Frimpong could leave Leverkusen ‘as early as the summer’ to make room for the highly-rated Real Valladolid full-back.

As mentioned, Manchester United have been linked with Frimpong for several months, so they would be almost certain to make a summer bid.

Indeed, a new right-back seems to be a priority for Ten Hag. Aaron Wan Bissaka looked likely to leave in January, whereas Diogo Dalot could do with some quality competition.

However, Dalot’s injury issues gave Wan-Bissaka a chance to prove his quality after the World Cup break and in fairness, he has put in some decent performances recently.

But, signing Frimpong may be an opportunity too good to miss for United.

The Red Devils are also looking to reinforce the centre-back position, as they reportedly line up a move for a highly-rated Lyon defender, Castello Lukeba.

With that in mind, Ten Hag is looking to overhaul his defence as he aims to challenge for titles in the future.

Leverkusen chief admits ‘there will be exits’ this summer

In January, Bayer Leverkusen’s director of sport Simon Rolfes admitted ‘there will be exits’ from the club at the end of the season, with Frimpong one of the most likely to leave.

With that in mind, they have already lined up a replacement in Fresneda, but given how good Frimpong has been for the German side, he will be difficult to replace,

Since joining Leverkusen in 2020, the right-back has made 73 appearances, scoring seven goals and making 14 assists overall.

The 22-year-old has been in the best form of his career this season, with eight goal contributions in 20 league matches, as well as helping his team to five clean sheets.

Frimpong is a solid defender but also pacey, direct and can whip a great cross into the box. He is also versatile, in that he can play as a right-back or right-midfielder, so he could cover multiple positions for Ten Hag.

With the Dutch defender’s contract set to run out in June 2025, it is believed a bid of £25m could be required for his services, according to Transfermarkt

As for Fresneda, Kicker note that Leverkusen could afford his €15m (£13.2m) asking price and they could then sell Frimpong from ‘a position of strength.’

With that in mind, it will be interesting if United do make a summer bid for their long-term right-back target.
