Leading club named as Man Utd, Newcastle rival Atletico Madrid for Ligue 1 star

Boubacar Kamara Marseille

A report has revealed which club is in pole position to sign Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara, who is a target for Manchester United, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid.

Kamara is a product of the Marseille academy and has been shining in Ligue 1 over the past few seasons. Despite being just 22 years old, he is already on 154 appearances for the French outfit.

The defensive midfielder has featured 32 times so far this season, scoring once. He has even captained OM on occasion, both domestically and in Europe.

However, Kamara could end his long association with the club in the summer. His contract expires on June 30, meaning he is now free to speak with potential suitors.

OM are desperate to organise a new deal but face losing the France U21 international on a free transfer. And Premier League teams are ready to snap him up.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, United and Newcastle are part of the battle for Kamara’s services. Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa are also in the mix.

However, it is Atletico who are thought to be winning the transfer race. They supposedly have an agreement in principle with Kamara, after failing to land him during January.

Diego Simeone is willing to fast track Kamara into his starting eleven, which could see the Frenchman play alongside Koke and Rodrigo de Paul in midfield.

United and Newcastle continue to monitor the situation, but it seems a transfer to Spain is most likely.

According to the report, United are being held back by the uncertainty over their next manager. Ralf Rangnick is only interim boss after all and will begin a consultancy role this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain is a target, and could convince Kamara to join, although United are yet to approach the former Tottenham boss.

Man Utd linked with world-class star

Meanwhile, United are reportedly positioning themselves at the front of the queue to sign Robert Lewandowski.

As per Bild, United are very much in pole position to sign him. The German paper claims Ralf Rangnick’s side have ‘registered their interest’ in the player. In addition, they claim officials at United have let it be known they ‘would like to make the first offer’.

That, of course, all depends, on whether a parting of ways is likely this summer.

However, there is a growing feeling in the German media that this will be the final year for Lewandowski at the Allianz.

And, as transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claims, Lewandowski’s future “remains open” as he reaches a critical point in talks.

Furthermore, Bayern may reportedly look to move the striker on if they are unable to agree terms. Now 33, there is an acceptance that Lewandowski is in the autumn of his career.
