Manchester United are understood to have secured Bruno Fernandes to a new contract, tying him to the club for another five years and handing a handsome wages rise in the process.

United are preparing for what is likely to be the most important summer in their history. They are currently interviewing for another new manager, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Ten Hag the main candidates. Whoever gets the job will be their fifth permanent boss since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

And the new man will be given a steep mission – to close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table.

With working going on hard behind the scenes, United are in the process of deciding which players will stay or go. To that end, a report recently named 11 players likely to leave, with several big names on it.

However, one man they seemingly want to keep is Fernandes.

The player has been United’s best and most consistent star since a January 2020 move to Old Trafford. To date, Fernandes has 49 goals in 117 matches for Manchester United – a sublime record from midfield.

Indeed, there have been times over the past two years that Fernandes has single-handedly dragged United through games. To that end, he’s probably been – alongside David De Gea – their most consistent star.

Safe to say then that United’s initial £47m investment has been paid back, and then some.

Fernandes signed a five-and-a-half-year deal upon joining the Red Devils, with the deal still having just over three years left to run. However, United are keen to reward the player for his fantastic progress – and double his money in the process.

Now trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given the new deal the ‘Here we go’ seal of approval. The Italian only uses the phrase when he can confirm an agreement is 100% certain.

Per reports, Fernandes is set to sign a two-year extension to his agreement, keeping him at the club until 2027.

Furthermore, the Portuguese star will also see his salary doubled from £100,000 a week to nearer £200,000.

That elevates him towards the higher end of United’s top earners.

The news will perhaps come as a surprise given United do not yet know who their new manager will be.

There have been some suggestions that the new coach might not be able to accommodate Fernandes into his side.

This was certainly the fear of Rio Ferdinand when he raised the issue earlier this week.

However, his fears now look to have eased with the new deal seemingly signed and sealed.

As such, United website Stretty News claims the Bruno Fernandes contract is likely to be formally announced in the coming days.
