Bruno Fernandes reveals Erik ten Hag tactical alteration helping Man Utd players to ‘feel good’

Manchester United attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes has spoken about the tactical change which Erik ten Hag has made amid the club’s impressive pre-season.

The Red Devils began their run of friendly matches with a 4-0 victory over rivals Liverpool. Jadon Sancho, Fred, Anthony Martial and Facundo Pellistri all got on the scoresheet at the Rajamangala Stadium in Thailand.

Manchester United followed that up with a 4-1 win over Australian side Melbourne Victory. And earlier on Tuesday they beat Crystal Palace 3-1.

Martial has impressed in particular, finding the net in all three outings. Of course, pre-season friendlies are not an exact reflection of Ten Hag’s starting eleven. Nor do they reveal how the team will do next season.

But Ten Hag is instilling new confidence into the United squad, as well as putting across his own tactics.

Following the victory over Palace, Fernandes spoke with MUTV about how Ten Hag is changing their style – resulting in the players feeling ‘good’.

“We’ve been most aggressive now,” the 27-year-old said (via Manchester Evening News).

“The three guys up front have been aggressive when they pressed, it’s been strong, it’s made the last line squeeze, the midfielders too.

“And when we turn over the ball we’re closer to the goal. We have freedom, there’s lots of spaces in the middle and we’re better on the ball too.

“We feel good, the results help on that, playing good football a lot of things to improve yet but we’ll have time to do that and be ready for the first game of the season.”

It appears the ‘aggressive’ pressing style Ten Hag wants to use is working. Players such as Fernandes are feeling more confident going into the new campaign.

United’s press is one area which had to be addressed. Many were expecting Ralf Rangnick to get United to do this well, but this didn’t happen and teams simply played around them.

However, Ten Hag’s training methods are clearly working. As a result, we could see an entirely different United side – in terms of style – when they get their Premier League season underway.

It is easy to get carried away with victories in pre-season. Managers make plenty of changes and don’t always use their best players.

But wins over the likes of Liverpool and Palace will do no harm to the United squad. They have had several poor years and will be hoping to turn things around under Ten Hag.

One issue that needs solving though is that of Cristiano Ronaldo. His future is unclear after he told United chiefs of his desire to leave earlier this summer.

Ten Hag says he is ‘well informed’ on the situation and has given his verdict on whether Ronaldo will stay at Old Trafford.
