Bruno Fernandes reveals honest belief on Cristiano Ronaldo future, addressing Sporting return talk

Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo warming up

Bruno Fernandes hopes that Cristiano Ronaldo will remain his teammate for club as well as country going into the new season with Manchester United.

Fernandes and Ronaldo have been lining up together for Manchester United over the past 12 months, after already sharing the pitch with Portugal. However, the latter’s future is uncertain after their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Ronaldo only signed a two-year contract when returning to Manchester United last summer. Hence, the 37-year-old could be the subject of a big decision this year.

He has been linked with other clubs, few of whom would be able to afford his wages. Yet he could still be part of Erik ten Hag’s new project at Old Trafford.

Still the centre of attention, Ronaldo’s future will be in focus until the transfer window closes. But one man who is hoping – and expecting – that he remains a Man Utd player is compatriot Fernandes.

The 27-year-old does not think United would be willing to lose such an important player. Therefore, he hopes to see him again for the start of pre-season training after their holidays.

Fernandes told O Jogo: “Now we’re both on vacation and nobody bothers their friends on vacation.

“What I hope is that Cristiano will be there with me on Monday, that he’s one of those who will come back later because of the Seleção’s games and I’m not waiting for nothing more than that.

“As far as I know there is nothing more than that, but everyone knows their future. I don’t believe the club is willing to lose a value like Cristiano.”

Bruno Fernandes discusses prospect of Cristiano Ronaldo re-joining Sporting

Fernandes joined United from Ronaldo’s former club, Sporting CP, in January 2020.

There has long been an idea that Ronaldo will return to the Lisbon outfit one day towards the end of his career. Fernandes knows it could be a possibility, but it will be up to his teammate as and when.

Ronaldo isn’t going anywhere

Erik Ten Hag has said Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale after Chelsea boss Todd Boehly met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes to discuss the possibility of a deal.

Fernandes added: “I don’t know, but for Sporting fans it would be a great moment; almost everyone would like that to happen.

“But it depends on what Cristiano expects for his future. He has the ambition to continue playing for many years to come and we’ll see what he does will decide, I hope after the contract with United ends.

“I think it’s a dream for most Sporting fans to see Cristiano wearing a Sporting shirt playing in Alvalade.”

Ronaldo previously played 31 times for Sporting, scoring five goals. Across two spells with United, where he originally established himself as one of the world’s best players, he has contributed 142 goals from 330 games.
