Man Utd striker aims thinly-veiled dig at Solskjaer; urges ‘beautiful’ reunion

Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani hug during Tottenham vs Manchester United, October 2021

Edinson Cavani has heaped praise on Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo and sent a clear message to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he should be up front alongside the Portugal skipper.

Cavani is now in his second season at Old Trafford after taking up the option to stay for 2021-2022. It seemed as though the Uruguay international was set to leave after just one campaign but he had a change of heart. Injury meant he made only 13 Premier League starts last term, with a further 13 appearances from the bench.

And the former Paris Saint-Germain ace would have expected to see more game time this season. However, the arrival of Ronaldo has scuppered those plans.

The ex-Real Madrid star is a guaranteed starter and means Cavani is now back on the bench. The South American has started just two league games among five outings and has yet to play the full 90 minutes.

Cavani has found the net just once from eight outings in all competitions. Conversely, Ronaldo has scored nine times from 12 appearances.

But, far from being jealous of his team-mate, the veteran striker has nothing but admiration for the Portuguese.

“It’s a pleasure not only for the fact that he’s a football star, but also for the fact that I see the way he has to handle the brilliance of that star that he has forged in his career,” he said, as quoted by ESPN.

“And to see the way he faces each training day by day is a sincere pleasure. He is one of the great players that I have played with and that arouses admiration in me.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba may well have played his last game for Manchester United thanks to an injury suffered in training with France that could keep him out until the new year, with more news on Kieran Trippier and Edinson Cavani.

“You enjoy it and try to learn, follow him in things that you may think are perfect, and I try to enjoy it in the sense that football sometimes allows you to hang out with stars but does not let you enjoy them for different reasons.

The players now have a couple of weeks away from domestic action during the international break. But they will soon be back at their clubs to head into the winter months.

United need a change of fortune if they are to compete for a place in the top four. Solskjaer is under pressure after a poor run of results.

And Cavani, who is currently sidelined with a tendon injury, hopes the Norwegian pairs the duo together before too long.

“The important thing in the team is to complement each other, they have already seen us together and I think that beautiful and positive things have come out,” added the 34-year-old.

“I’ve always said that the pitch is the one that speaks and one must be there to give the best, train every day to be 100 per cent.

“Hopefully we can continue to share moments on the pitch and give victories to the fans of our team, Manchester United.”
