Man Utd Champions League winner ripped apart for 2022 hopes by Liverpool and City legends

Manchester United's Peter Schmeichel holds the Champions League, 1999

Manchester United Champions League winner Peter Schmeichel was ripped apart after claiming they could win the competition this season.

The Red Devils have been left with two main goals for the rest of this campaign. They need to finish in the top four in the Premier League, and they have one last shot at silverware in European competition. That’s because they have been knocked out of both domestic cups.

With the way their season has gone so far, winning the Champions League looks unlikely.

They survived a scare in the group stage after losing their first match away at Young Boys. And now they face a tough round-of-16 test in the form of Atletico Madrid.

Despite that, Schmeichel is confident that they remain in contention with the rest of Europe’s big boys.

While working as a pundit for CBS Sports, he was asked by colleague Micah Richards: “Peter, do you honestly believe that Man United can win the Champions League?

“Be honest with me now. No messing around.”

After a brief pause, Schmeichel simply replied: “Yes.”

Richards burst into laughter, joined in hysterics by Jamie Carragher beside him while Thierry Henry sat looking awkwardly on.

Jose Mourinho wants Cristiano Ronaldo at Roma if he wants to leave Manchester United. Is CR7 too big for Roma?

Schmeichel then added: “Of course I do. What kind of a question is that?”

“What kind of an answer is that?,” Carragher jokingly quipped back as the laughter continued amongst the panel.

The Man City and Liverpool legends clearly felt United have no chance of lifting a trophy this season.

However, when Liverpool won the Champions League in 2005, they finished just fifth in the Premier League table, with United currently fourth.

United have Champions League competition

Meanwhile, reports have suggested United face competition from Juventus for target Nicolo Zaniolo.

Reports earlier in the week wrote that Liverpool could make a move for Zaniolo in the summer. It followed links with Manchester United for the attacking midfielder.

Zaniolo can play centrally or on the right wing – and has even featured as a support striker in a 3-5-2 system for Roma this season.

But there are no guarantees over how much longer he will be in the Italian capital. His contract with Roma expires in 2024.

There could be renewal talks over the summer, but by then, Tuttosport believe Juventus will be ready to pounce…
