Christian Eriksen: Star’s Man Utd verdict revealed as Dane’s No 1 transfer choice emerges

Christian Eriksen, Brentford, warms up before Premier League match v Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Christian Eriksen has reportedly made clear who he wants to play for next season amid claims that he has been offered a lucrative contract to join Manchester United.

The Dane’s resurregence is one of the sporting stories of 2022. Just over a year after his collapse at Euro 2020 with a heart attack, few would have expected him to resume his footballing career. But that’s exactly what he’s done – and then some – proving his undoubted talents in a brief, but exceptional, spell at Brentford.

That six-month stint at the Brentford Community Stadium was managed exceptionally well by Thomas Frank. Easing Eriksen back slowly and steadily, the former Inter Milan star soon began finding his feet again.

Indeed, in 11 Premier League appearances he scored once and assisted with four more. And his overall qualities helped the Bees pull clear from a possible relegation battle into mid-table safety.

With his short-term deal expiring on June 30, Eriksen is to soon become a free agent. Brentford are looking to extend his stay, but that has very quickly been knocked back.

And that has seemingly opened the door for a move to either Manchester United or Tottenham.

Indeed, earlier this week it emerged that United have made a very serious offer to lure him to Old Trafford.

United offer to Christian Eriksen rejected

New United manager Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster his midfield options and reportedly sees Eriksen as a perfect addition.

The Red Devils are also in talks with Frenkie de Jong too. But with Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic all departing, United have room for two new midfield additions.

However, it appears United will miss out on Eriksen with The Athletic making clear that Eriksen plans to stay in London.

The Dane does not want to uproot his family from their London base and intends to continue in the capital next season.

And that would make Tottenham the clear favourites for his signature. Indeed, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has already given a hint to Antonio Conte’s plan.

And while Eriksen himself has given nothing away about Tottenham, it seems an emotional return to Spurs is now on the cards.

Dane deserves another chance at the top

Speaking to Bold in his native Denmark, though, Eriksen insists he will bide his time over his next move.

“No, and they know that too,” the midfielder said of his transfer thinking.

“There are many criteria and many different things inside such a decision. Sometimes it goes fast in football, other times a little slower.

“You are not in control of it yourself. I have to make the best decision and not rush anything through.

“My phone stays on, yes. But I also know my agent well enough to know that he only calls if there’s something exciting.”

A return to Tottenham would be something of a fairytale for Eriksen and Spurs.

It’s one a vast majority of their supporters would love too.

Erik Ten Hag targeting Christian Eriksen move for Manchester United

Christian Eriksen could solve Manchester United’s problems this summer with free transfer

Not only does he remain a quality player, but he is one that is still hugely admired at Spurs. Indeed, he was very much a fans’ favourite during his seven-season spell in north London.

He could move there without too much pressure as well. With Tottenham having a wealth of options, Conte can use him as and when he’s needed.

Juggling the Champions League and the Premier League can often be difficult. But having Christian Eriksen there as an option would ease the workload on the Spurs squad. It would also, of course, complete a remarkable career resurrection for the player.

Spurs, meanwhile, remain in the hunt for Richarlison and have now learned of the terms Everton want over his prospective transfer.
