Rio Ferdinand feels Manchester United made a big mistake in not pursuing a deal for Cody Gakpo last summer as the winger’s price tag has now shot up.
The 23-year-old has been a star for Ajax for a number of years, with links to many clubs. But, after scoring 21 goals in all competitions last term, the race for his signature is hotting up. United were linked last summer, with both the player and Ajax admitting Erik ten Hag tested the water.
Reports claim the Red Devils made an offer but it was not deemed enough by the Eredivisie outfit.
Trusted transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Gakpo could have been bought for around €40m in summer 2022. But United’s offer fell short of that figure and he remained in Amsterdam.
The former PSV youth star has taken his game to another level in 2022-2023. And he had already notched 13 goals and assisted 17 in all competitions by the time the World Cup kicked off.
Gakpo has transferred his club form onto the interantional stage and has found the net on three occasions for the Netherlands in Qatar.
The talented youngster scored against each of Oranje’s group opponents, Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar.
It is no wonder clubs are queuing up to sign him. And former United ace Ferdinand believes the club’s inability to secure him last summer will end in a financial hit.
He told the Vibe with Five World Cup special: “Man United’s next signing [Gakpo], who we probably could’ve had for £25m to £30m before the tournament who has probably doubled to £60m or £80m.
“Man United are just going to get bent over again to put it bluntly, the numbers that are going to be spoken about after this tournament are going to be high.”
Ferdinand expects lofty Gakpo fee
Gakpo made his Ajax debut as a teenager back in February 2018. With silky skills and pace to burn, he is a player to excite the fans and give defenders nightmares.
The Eindhoven-born star is currently joint-top in the race for the World Cup Golden Boot and has five goals for his country in 2022.
He is the player on everyone’s lips and looks set to move next year. And Ferdinand believes that his value has already gone through the roof.
“If he does nothing from this point on, he’s doubled minimum in value, wage and in the transfer fee,” he added.
Ferdinand takes aim at Glazers
The Glazer family have never been popular owners, with United fans protesting in their thousands back in August.
And it seems as though they might well be prepared to sell the club for an astronomical fee.
There has been widespread criticism of the owners over the years.
Ferdinand has now added his voice to the list. And the former England defender suggested a change at the top might help seal a deal for Gakpo.
“He’s got three goals in the World Cup,” he continued. “Especially with Ronaldo leaving, wow, wow, wow, Man United need new owners now.”
Jurgen Klopp may well look to clear the decks next summer. But they might have to move for Gakpo in the new year, with so much competition for the talented forward.
