PSV have reportedly come to the big decision that they will offer Cody Gakpo a bumper new contract amid Manchester United, Leeds and Southampton hoping to sign him.
Manchester United set their sights on Gakpo recently as Erik ten Hag is a big fan of the versatile forward. This comes as no surprise after he put up 12 goals and 13 assists in the Eredivisie last season. Gakpo has been in even better form this term, notching six league goals and in just four outings.
Manchester United were willing to spend big on Gakpo. However, they eventually went for Ajax star Antony instead.
The Brazilian has penned a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months, after United spent a reported £86million on him.
Leeds and Southampton then sensed the opportunity to pounce. They were both looking at signing Gakpo on transfer deadline day.
As per Fabrizio Romano, Leeds agreed personal terms with the player and also offered more money to PSV than Premier League rivals Southampton.
However, Gakpo ended up staying in the Netherlands as PSV didn’t agree to Leeds’ terms. Plus, Holland national team boss Louis van Gaal told the 23-year-old to remain where he is so as not to jeopardise his World Cup chances.
Earlier on Friday, Gakpo spoke about the summer transfer saga. He told PSV TV: “Manchester United had reported at the beginning of the transfer window. We were waiting for that a bit.
Cody Gakpo talks potential Man Utd switch
“The signals became more and more positive and at a certain point I thought it might fall in that direction.
“That option faded a bit and completely last week. We worked the whole window towards it. Until last week, I thought I would go to Manchester United.
“In the last week I looked at all options. In the end PSV came up with a good offer and that turned out to be the right choice for me.”
According to Dutch outlet Voetbal Primeur, the Eredivisie side have now come to the big decision of offering Gakpo a new deal.
His current PSV terms don’t run out until June 2026, which means they don’t have to worry about a free-transfer exit any time soon.
PSV plan to reward Gakpo with fresh terms
Nevertheless, they want to reward Gakpo for staying at the club by handing him a ‘major salary upgrade’.
This is what they did with Ibrahim Sangare after his proposed move to the Premier League fell through.
Sangare is now one of the best paid players in the Netherlands, and PSV want this to be the same for his team-mate Gakpo.
They are apparently hoping to announce the new contract ‘soon’, which suggests renewal talks have already taken place with the star and his agent.
While Gakpo will receive a handsome pay rise, it will still be below what Man Utd, Leeds or Southampton could have given him.
And the forward, who mainly operates at left wing, is still likely to leave next summer if clubs come calling.
Once the World Cup is over, Cody Gakpo will fancy his chances of making a big-money move and testing himself against some of the world’s best defenders.
Meanwhile, rumoured Man Utd transfer target Sergino Dest says he ‘didn’t even think twice’ before joining AC Milan from Barcelona.
