Sporting CP are said to have made contact with the representatives of Cristiano Ronaldo amid an interest in taking him back from Manchester United.
Ronaldo’s future has been a major distraction for Manchester United this summer. After they finished sixth in the Premier League following his return to the club, he has been seeking a way out. The Portuguese legend wants to be playing in the Champions League, not the Europa League.
With that in mind, he has been putting pressure on to move away from the club. There is also now a feeling that Manchester United will not rule out his departure.
But finding a suitor will be difficult due to his high wages and the fact he is close to the end of his career. One of the only possible solutions it has been narrowed down to is a return to his first club, Sporting.
Obviously, the Lisbon-based outfit would struggle to accommodate his wages. But if there is a willingness for a deal, perhaps there could be a way around it – albeit a complicated one.
Now, 90min are reporting that Sporting have touched base with Ronaldo’s representatives to confirm they would be interested in taking him back to where it all began.
The idea of playing for Sporting again has never really left Ronaldo’s mind. According to the report, he has been thinking of heading back there in 2023 or 2024 – depending on when his Manchester United contract expires.
But now, Sporting could try to get him to join them this year. They would allow him to continue competing in the Champions League.
Foot Mercato are also reporting interest from the Lions. Their sporting director, Hugo Viana, is working to convince him of a return.
They also reiterate it will be difficult to pull off. But with the narrowing options available to Ronaldo, he may have to start considering compromises.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are planning to bring in a new centre-forward regardless of Ronaldo’s status at the club. They are going to have a busy few weeks building their squad for the season.
Sporting return would be emotional for Cristiano Ronaldo
Perhaps only by September 2, one day after the transfer window closes, it will become clear whether Ronaldo will be a part of it or not.
Should Manchester United keep Cristiano Ronaldo?
Do Manchester United need Cristiano Ronaldo next season?
There is no doubt that it would be an emotional sight to see Ronaldo representing Sporting again.
Some will wonder, though, whether it is still too soon. Although he is 37 years old, he is still on good form. Last season, he was Manchester United’s highest scorer.
The Portuguese league has been building its profile in recent years. The incorporation of their country’s captain into the division would be a huge statement.
Is Ronaldo ready to make that move, though? It is something he is going to have to decide quite soon if he is so intent on leaving Manchester United.
