Man Utd legend Ronaldo offered away in unthinkable move branded the ‘biggest betrayal’

The agent of Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly worked on an unthinkable move away from Man Utd this summer, and the prospect has been labelled as a “betrayal” by a prominent manager.

Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford was greeted with a hero’s reception last summer. The Portuguese icon returned to Manchester United after 12 incredibly successful years away at Real Madrid and Juventus.

Ronaldo hit the ground running with a brace against Newcastle on his debut. He followed that up with a slew of late winners, most notably in the Champions League.

However, his dip in form coincided with United’s, and with two months remaining, the club’s season has fallen flat.

All that remains is for United to attempt to finish in fourth spot. But if they fail to do so, speculation has already begun to swirl Cristiano Ronaldo could be off.

Indeed, retaining Ronaldo without the lure of Champions League football would be difficult. What’s more, Manchester United may wish to clean house if opting to embark on a total rebuild under their next permanent manager anyway.

Now, according to the Mirror, Ronaldo’s agent – Jorge Mendes – has offered his client a scarcely believable way out.

Ronaldo to Barcelona idea sparks Xavi response

Citing the Spanish media, it’s claimed Ronaldo has been offered to La Liga giant Barcelona.

Ronaldo is arguably Real Madrid’s greatest ever player. Moving to Barcelona – even at this late stage in his career – is an unthinkable notion.

That is also the view of current Barcelona boss Xavi who has labelled the idea a “betrayal”.

Per the Mirror, Xavi said Ronaldo moving to Barcelona would be “the biggest betrayal in history between Barcelona and Real”.

Ronaldo would not be the first player to cross the divide between the two legendary Spanish clubs.

Man Utd managerial target Luis Enrique, Brazilian striker Ronaldo and Luis Figo are just a handful of major names that played for both clubs.

However, Figo’s switch from Barcelona to Real in 2000 drew a particularly fierce response during an El Clasico match in 2002.

Figo was famously pelted with objects from the Barca fans while attempting to take a corner. One of the object’s thrown was a pig’s head.

Thankfully for Ronaldo, he won’t have to endure that type of treatment as agent Mendes’ ambitious plans have already been torpedoed by Xavi.
