A club statement has confirmed Manchester United have cut ties with Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo following his huge interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo discussed several topics during his chat with the British journalist, including Erik ten Hag, Wayne Rooney, the Man Utd fans and the Glazer family. He earned praise from the Man Utd faithful for saying how much he cares about them and for blasting how the Glazers run the side.
However, Ronaldo also went way too far when speaking about the likes of Ten Hag and Rooney. He said he doesn’t respect Ten Hag due to the Dutchman showing no respect to him, while he also suggested Rooney is jealous of his prolonged playing career. In addition, the 37-year-old said he hadn’t heard of former Man Utd interim boss Ralf Rangnick.
Man Utd soon responded to the interview by saying they would investigate it and attempt to establish the full facts. Reports claimed they were preparing to axe Ronaldo by terminating his contract.
And it seems that is exactly what Red Devils director of football John Murtough has done. On Tuesday afternoon, Man Utd released the following statement: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect.
‘The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future.
‘Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch.’
It is a sad way for Ronaldo’s second spell at Man Utd to end. He re-joined the club last summer to great fanfare and went on to bag 24 goals in all competitions.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Ten Hag relationship goes from bad to worse
However, Ronaldo’s place in the team came under threat following the appointment of Ten Hag. The coach was never going to use Ronaldo in every game due to his preferred style of play.
Things gradually got worse at Man Utd, to the point where Ronaldo refused to come off the bench as a substitute against Tottenham.
And the five-time Ballon d’Or winner soon had enough. Presumably, this is when he conducted the interview with Morgan.
Reports claim Ronaldo and his agent, Jorge Mendes, are in talks over a massive return to Real Madrid. But top sources are yet to verify these suggestions.
Of course, Ronaldo is currently on international duty with Portugal at the World Cup. He will likely start when they come up against Ghana on Thursday.
