Cristiano Ronaldo transfer news: Two clubs linked with monumental signing of Man Utd ace, as agent gets to work on next move

A report suggests Cristiano Ronaldo could leave Manchester United this summer, with two clubs in Europe aiming to sign him.

Ronaldo sensationally returned to Old Trafford last summer as the Red Devils paid Juventus £12.8million for him. The forward proved he can still make a big impact for Manchester United, finishing the campaign on 24 goals and three assists in 39 matches.

Ronaldo was Manchester United’s top scorer, 14 strikes ahead of Bruno Fernandes in second place.

Without the legendary 37-year-old, Manchester United wouldn’t have been able to reach the Champions League round of 16. And they certainly wouldn’t have come sixth in the Premier League.

Ronaldo’s United contract runs until June 2023, meaning supporters can enjoy at least one more season of him at the Theatre of Dreams.

Despite Ronaldo’s commitment to the club, reports claim Erik ten Hag may drop the Portugal international in favour of a new option and different system.

Ten Hag says this isn’t the case and that he will use Ronaldo next season because the star guarantees goals.

But Italian outlet La Republicca are now suggesting it is ‘finished’ between Ronaldo and United.

They state Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is getting to work on finding a new club for his client ahead of next season.

The main reason for this is apparently Ten Hag’s style of play, which may not suit Ronaldo.

La Repubblica push two clubs as potential next destinations for the five-time Champions League winner. The first is Roma, which would see him reunite with former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.

However, there are a few reasons why this move is incredibly unlikely to happen. Firstly, Roma would struggle to pay anywhere near the wages Ronaldo is taking home at United. He is one of the top earners in the Prem, picking up £480,000 each week.

Roma’s biggest earner, Lorenzo Pellegrini, is handed £122,000 every seven days. This shows there is a huge difference between Ronaldo’s wage demands and what Roma can offer.

Another important factor is Roma’s lack of Champions League football. After winning last season’s inaugural Europa Conference League, they will compete in the Europa League next term.

This is the same as Manchester United, who came sixth in the Premier League during 2021-22.

Ronaldo wants to play in the UCL. But as Roma cannot offer this, just like Ten Hag’s side, moving to the Stadio Olimpico wouldn’t be a step up for the goalscorer.

La Repubblica claim a return to Sporting Lisbon could also be on the cards for Ronaldo. He came through their academy before joining United for the first time in August 2003.

Ronaldo is more likely to accept a proposal from Sporting as he is very fond of the club. They wouldn’t even be able to match Roma’s wage offer, but he will be more inclined to consider them.

However, Ronaldo will still feel he has a year or two left at the top level and probably won’t want to leave England just yet. Therefore, this report must be taken with a pinch of salt.

Meanwhile, Gary Neville has spoken about Paul Pogba’s comments during the midfielder’s new documentary.
