Man Utd on cusp of major contract ‘agreement’ with all big obstacles cleared; Ten Hag makes new transfer decision

David de Gea and Marcus Rashford

Manchester United are on the verge of reaching a contract agreement with one of their big-name players, according to the latest reports.

On April 4, Man Utd announced that left-back Luke Shaw had signed a new deal with the club. It is designed to keep him on their books until June 2027.

But the Red Devils still have some work to do if they are to prevent a mass exodus of players over the next 18 months. David de Gea is due to become a free agent this summer as things stand, while the likes of Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alejandro Garnacho have contracts which run out in June 2024.

Man Utd’s talks with De Gea and Rashford – two of their highest earners – have been made more complicated by the wage cap which could soon be introduced. Man Utd hope to prevent astonishing contracts from being handed out, such as the ones which have been given to Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez previously, and are therefore ready to set a salary limit at £300,000 a week.

This has put De Gea’s future at Old Trafford in doubt as he currently takes home a whopping £375,000 per week.

But according to 90Min, Erik ten Hag’s side are on the verge of reaching an ‘agreement’ with the goalkeeper and his camp.

It is claimed Man Utd have cleared all the major hurdles and now just need to sort out the finer details before an agreement can be put in place.

De Gea has agreed on a pay cut, although 90Min do not reveal exactly how much his new deal will be worth. Previously it has been reported that his wages will drop down to £300,000 a week.

Ten Hag forced to stick with De Gea

Man Utd have been linked with several keepers amid question marks over De Gea’s form. He was dreadful as they were knocked out of the Europa League by Sevilla, while he also did not look like saving any penalties as Man Utd snuck past Brighton to reach the FA Cup final.

Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa is one potential target, while Man Utd have also been credited with an interest in Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez and David Raya of Brentford.

But Ten Hag has told Man Utd officials that extending De Gea’s contract is the best option right now. The manager is prioritising the arrivals of a new striker and midfielder this summer, which means Man Utd will struggle to afford a top-class keeper.

As a result, he has decided to stick with De Gea for another season before potentially going all out for a replacement in summer 2024.

Once De Gea is tied down, the Carabao Cup winners need to work on Rashford’s fresh terms. He has enjoyed the season of his life and is fully deserving of a big new contract. Paris Saint-Germain are known to be admirers of the attacker, so a new Man Utd deal would also help to keep them at bay.

Meanwhile, Tuesday’s Transfer Gossip includes Man Utd ‘monitoring’ a Paris Saint-Germain star in addition to Kylian Mbappe.
