Man Utd stance on £4m Daniel Bachmann transfer revealed after Rangnick exit

Daniel Bachmann with the Austria national team

Manchester United remain interested in Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann despite the departure of Ralf Rangnick, it has been claimed.

There could be a key change in the goalkeeping department at Old Trafford this summer. David De Gea will remain number one, but his deputy Dean Henderson wants to leave to find a similar opportunity elsewhere.

It now looks likely that the former Sheffield United loanee will be heading to newly promoted Nottingham Forest. And with Lee Grant retiring, there will be a need for a new backup goalkeeper at Manchester United.

In that regard, Bachmann revealed in May that Man Utd were showing an interest in him. He played 12 times in the Premier League for Watford, who were relegated, last season.

United’s interest in the 27-year-old seemed to stem from interim manager Rangnick, who has since ditched his advisory role with the club in favour of becoming the manager of Bachmann’s national team, Austria.

But there could still be a chance for Bachmann to join United as a replacement for Henderson and Grant.

According to The Athletic, their interest has not faded despite Rangnick’s departure. Interestingly, they also reveal there is as yet no competition for Bachmann’s signature.

That said, he is just one of a few options United are considering to join De Gea and Tom Heaton in their goalkeeping department. But Bachmann is willing to make the move.

Watford are looking likely to install Maduka Okoye as their number one for their return to the Championship. Hence, Bachmann would rather sit on the Old Trafford bench than that at Vicarage Road.

For a transfer to happen, The Athletic predict a fee between £2m and £4m to prise him out of a Watford contract that lasts until 2024.

Daniel Bachmann deal within Man Utd reach

It would clearly be within budget for United, who have several other areas of their squad to invest in as the Erik ten Hag era begins.

De Gea was one of their better performers in a dismal 2021-22 season for the team as a whole. Therefore, there is no need for them to sign another world-class keeper to compete with him.

Instead, someone like Bachmann could arrive to support De Gea from the shadows. He may not be as good as Henderson, but is less likely to become unsettled if he does not play regularly.

Man Utd must merely hope De Gea can continue at his top level as their number one. Heaton’s abilities as another backup, despite his age, should also not be forgotten.

But the addition of Bachmann would provide a little bit more security in terms of numbers.
