Manchester United star wants showdown talks with Erik ten Hag over long-term future

David de Gea is reportedly pushing his representatives to arrange a meeting with Erik ten Hag to determine his long-term future at Manchester United.

The long-serving keeper will turn 32 in November and he is out of contract next summer. De Gea is one of a number of United stars who could run down their deals and leave for free next July.

That is a scenario that is unlikely to happen though because United hold 12-month extension options on De Gea’s deal.

Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Fred and Marcus Rashford are all in similar positions and the club will more than likely exercise those option before the end of the year.

Whether or not De Gea will stay with the club though beyond that is another question. According to the Daily Star, De Gea” fears his time at Old Trafford might be coming to an end” and is keen to find out what the future holds under Ten Hag.

De Gea has played every minute of United’s eight games so far this season. And there has been no inkling that Ten Hag is pondering playing back-up Martin Dubravka ahead of the Spaniard.

Dubravka arrived as the No.2 from Newcastle in the summer, but he has yet to feature for United.

Recent speculation surrounding Jan Oblak and Emi Martinez has brought De Gea’s future into focus.

According to Football Insider, Villa have given Martinez a £45m price tag to ward off United. Oblak meanwhile has been linked with United on and off for several years.

Now French source Jeunes Footeux, say United want the 29-year-old so much that they are willing to double his Atletico Madrid wages. And they would have room to manoeuvre if they allowed De Gea to depart.

United ‘stalling’ over De Gea

The Madrid-born stopper is on a reported £350,000 a week at Old Trafford. While Oblak will also be out of contract next summer and therefore could sign a pre-contract agreement in January.

As per the Star, there is a feeling that United are “stalling” over De Gea’s extension, which has fuelled transfer talk over other options.

It’s worth noting though that Jesse Lingaard did not see his 12 month extension exercised until the end of December in 2020, when his deal was expiring in June 2021.

So there will definitely not be any panic just yet, but De Gea will be keen to find out what Ten Hag is thinking. According to Calciomercato, Juventus are keen on De Gea with Ten Hag ready to let United’s longest serving player depart.

If that is the stance of Ten Hag, then De Gea will get the perfect opportunity at the World Cup this winter to show that he still has what it takes.
