David Ornstein drops Man Utd bombshell as Euro giants launch offer for ideal Ten Hag striker signing
Manchester United are at risk of missing out on one of their priority summer signings after Paris Saint-Germain submitted a rival bid for him, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.
Man Utd got their summer business underway by spending an initial £55m – plus an extra £5m in potential bonuses – to sign Mason Mount from Chelsea. And on July 20, they followed that deal up with the capture of goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter. Onana, who will replace David de Gea at Old Trafford, cost Erik ten Hag’s side around £47m.
Having bolstered his goalkeeper and midfield ranks, Ten Hag is now looking to end Man Utd’s woes in the striker department. The Red Devils have been linked with several great centre-forwards including Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic and Randal Kolo Muani, but their top target is now Rasmus Hojlund of Atalanta.
Man Utd have already agreed personal terms with Hojlund. This was not hard to do as the Dane is a big fan of the club.
If Man Utd manage to finalise a deal with Atalanta, then Hojlund will pen a five-year contract with them worth £80,000 a week.
On Wednesday, it emerged that Man Utd had firmed up their interest in Hojlund by presenting an opening offer. As per Fabrizio Romano, it is worth an initial €50m (£43m), plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons. Although, it is unclear whether this will be accepted as Atalanta are holding out for €70m (£60.1m).
Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio added that the 20-year-old has rejected a more lucrative contract offer from PSG as he hopes to sign for Man Utd.
But that claim has now been shut down by Ornstein. The trusted journalist has revealed PSG have sent their opening gambit for Hojlund, which is worth £43m in total. The French giants are unlikely to bid any higher than this sum as they feel Atalanta’s £60.1m valuation is ‘unrealistic’, considering the fact he only has one season in a top five European league under his belt.
PSG burst into Rasmus Hojlund race
Ornstein adds that PSG have also had ‘positive talks’ with the player’s entourage over personal terms.
Ten Hag will be very worried about PSG bidding for Hojlund. They are one of the richest clubs in Europe and they usually dominate domestic competitions in France, which means a move to the Parc des Princes could be enticing for the rising star.
One saving grace for Man Utd is that they are more likely to have a bid accepted by Atalanta than PSG as they are willing to pay more money for Hojlund.
The six-cap Denmark international is now in a great position. He can decide between two of the biggest clubs in Europe, despite still being towards the start of his career.
One factor which Hojlund must consider is playing time. He must ensure that he is going to be a regular starter at his next club, as he does not want to simply warm the bench and allow his progress to stagnate.
