Man Utd to lodge ‘serious’ De Vrij bid once Inter hurdle is cleared, with move potentially aiding Arsenal

Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij

Man Utd are ‘likely’ to lodge an offer for Stefan de Vrij who is one step away from being allowed to leave Inter, and that development could be good news for Arsenal.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal are on the hunt for a defensive addition this summer. Today’s Transfer Gossip detailed the latest on the pair’s pursuit of Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez.

United have usurped Arsenal’s last bid, though the Gunners are expected to make a fresh move this coming week.

Ajax want £43m for the Argentine who is reportedly hot on the idea of reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

However, Ajax will only let the player decide who to join if both Man Utd and Arsenal bid the same amount.

That puts the Sun’s report linking Manchester United with Stefan de Vrij into focus.

The newspaper cite Italian outlet Gazetta dello Sport who claim the 30-year-old has emerged as a top target at Old Trafford.

De Vrij has just 12 months remaining on his current deal and Inter are now prepared to cash in to avoid losing such a saleable asset for nothing next summer.

Centre-back awaiting Inter green light

The only hurdle reportedly standing in De Vrij’s way is official confirmation from Inter that he’s free to pursue another move.

New United boss, Erik ten Hag, reportedly admires De Vrij for his ability on the ball. Ten Hag requires his defenders to be mobile, good in one-v-ones and excellent on the ball.

The Dutchman certainly ticks the last two categories and his mobility is greater than Harry Maguire’s, for example.

The report acknowledges United are yet to lodge an official bid. However, that is ‘likely’ to come once Inter give De Vrij the green light to leave. What’s more, the Sun state any offer is expected to be a ‘serious’ one.

De Vrij option to help Arsenal?

United are expected to continue pursuing Arsenal target, Lisandro Martinez. However, the fact they now have a viable alternative could be of benefit to the Gunners.

Ajax will sell Martinez to the highest bidder. United’s latest offer of £34.5m prior to add-ons was some way short of the £43m valuation.

A move for De Vrij would be more cost-effective given his age and contract status. Ultimately, the availability of De Vrij could see United back away from Martinez, leaving the path clear for Arsenal.

Additionally, the bombshell news Cristiano Ronaldo is open to leaving if a Champions League contender comes calling has thrown up a new problem.

Ten Hag reportedly wants to sign Ajax winger Antony if Ronaldo does depart. The Brazilian has a whopping £69m price tag. That could mean cheaper alternatives may have to be signed in other areas of the squad.
