Dean Henderson is still fighting for his Manchester United future – but one European suitor with a familiar connection is ready to make a move for him, according to a report.

Henderson has only played once so far this season. That could change on Tuesday night, when the Manchester Evening News expect him to start in the Champions League against Young Boys.

But beyond then, the MEN have cast further doubt on his future by revealing that he could be the subject of an approach from Ajax imminently.

Under the direction of former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who is chief executive of the Amsterdam club, Ajax have been keeping tabs on Henderson’s situation.

In fact, they tried to sign him 18 months ago after the end of his loan with Sheffield United. Now, Ajax could either take Henderson on loan themselves in January.

The Eredivisie giants want to strengthen in goal due to Andre Onana approaching the end of his contract. They may choose to cash in on the Cameroon international next month.

Behind him, they have former Everton veteran Maarten Stekelenburg as a backup. He is out for the season with an injury, though. Therefore, they are currently relying on 38-year-old Remko Pasveer.

Henderson would be a better option if they can agree terms with Man Utd. As things stand, no decision has been made on whether to loan out the England international in January.

Manchester United shortlist Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong

According to reports, Manchester United have joined the race for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong.

He pushed David De Gea for the number one berth last season after returning to his parent club. However, an absence in pre-season allowed De Gea the chance to reclaim his regular starting role.

Henderson has been on the fringes since and wants more regular gametime so he can still be in contention for his country by the time the 2022 World Cup comes around.

Dean Henderson has Rangnick hope

But he could yet return to prominence at Old Trafford after Ralf Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dugout.

Henderson is reportedly keen to impress the new interim manager. Rangnick’s own plans for Henderson remain unclear, though.

Man Utd are yet to suggest they would be willing to sell the 24-year-old. However, another loan is possible for a man they have under contract until 2025.

The summer addition of Tom Heaton as another backup goalkeeper would alleviate any concerns about a lack of depth in the event of Henderson’s exit.

Henderson, in the meantime, is keeping his options open. If he was to join Ajax, he would be able to play in the Champions League knockout stages.

It would therefore be an interesting avenue for him to go down. But only time will tell whether it is one all parties will agree to.
