Conflicting reports over first Man Utd deal as club ‘tables contract offer’ for midfielder

Jonas Hoffman and Denis Zakaria celebrate for Borussia Monchengladbach

Manchester United are looking to make Gladbach star Denis Zakaria their first signing of the January transfer window, according to a report.

25-year-old Zakaria has been a mainstay in the Gladbach midfield since 2017. However, he will be on the move this year after opting not to renew his contract with the Bundesliga side.

Zakaria has two options. He can finalise a pre-contract agreement with another club this month before joining them on July 1. Or the Switzerland international can pursue a January move, which will cost his new side a small fee.

The latter could be about to take place as The Sun, who cite German outlet Bild, claim United want to land Zakaria before the transfer window closes.

The report states representatives from the Old Trafford club have been in contact with Zakaria’s agent. They have apparently put a contract offer on the table.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are willing to pay to sign the defensive midfielder, rather than wait for him to become a free agent. Interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool could be forcing them into this decision.

However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given an opposing update. He says the club is yet to come forward with a bid.

Rangnick is a long-term admirer of Zakaria from his days managing in Germany. A conversation has been held between United and the agent, but Romano believes no offer is on the table.

Sevilla don’t want Martial as Manchester United price too expensive

Sources suggest a fee of just £6million will be enough to secure a deal, thanks to the player’s contract situation.

This would be a clever piece of business for United as Zakaria’s value sits at £24.3m, as per transfermarkt.

Gladbach also spent €10m (£8.3m) to sign him from Swiss outfit Young Boys four-and-a-half years ago.

Brighton star joins Zakaria on Man Utd wish list

English right-back Tariq Lamptey could link up with Zakaria in Manchester, too.

The Daily Mail put United in the frame to snatch the exciting Brighton man. They look set to rival Tottenham for his signature.

United are willing to pay £30m for Lamptey, although the Seagulls value him at £40m. This suggests some negotiating will need to be done before the switch can go through.

Rangnick currently has Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot at his disposal on the right side of defence. However, the manager has clearly been left unimpressed by the pair.

Rangnick is attracted by Lamptey’s ability to play as a standard full-back, or as a more attacking wing-back.

The 21-year-old is also on Arsenal’s radar, although it is unclear if Mikel Arteta’s side are pursuing him at the moment.
