Man Utd transfer intertwined with Real Madrid decision after scouting mission emerges

Man Utd stars Alex Telles, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Diogo Dalot

The future of Diogo Dalot could come to a head this summer after a report revealed why a potential move to Italy could hinge on Real Madrid’s plans.

The 23-year-old right-back had finally looked like stamping his mark in the United first-team this season. Dalot moved to Old Trafford in 2018, but had made just 20 league appearances in the three years before the current campaign.

A loan spell to AC Milan arose last season where by all accounts, he impressed.

That led to being retained in United’s squad this season after their summer pursuit of Kieran Trippier fell short.

After biding his time behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dalot was given a chance by Ralf Rangnick when starting 10 of 12 league matches between December and mid-February.

However, Dalot was then relegated back to the bench for three straight matches, epitomising his struggle to truly make his mark with Manchester United.

Dalot’s current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2023. United are understood to be keen to tie him down to fresh terms, but it remains unclear whether the player will commit.

He could easily be a sure-fire starter elsewhere. And per Football Italia, a return to Italy could be on the cards.

Citing the Italian press, it’s claimed Fiorentina have joined Roma in the race to snap Diogo Dalot up this summer.

Odriozola decision could determine Dalot fate

The right-back position is currently occupied by Alvaro Odriozola in Florence.

However, the Spaniard is only on loan from Real Madrid and Fiorentina did not negotiate an option to buy.

The Serie A side will reportedly attempt to bring Odriozola back on board on a permanent deal. Though their success in that regard will rest entirely with what decision Real Madrid make.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side may deem Odriziola surplus to requirements and sanction a sale. Alternatively, they may wish to retain him next season or sell to another club who could bid higher.

The second scenario would leave Fiorentina empty-handed and that’s where signing Dalot would come in.

Fiorentina reportedly had scouts in attendance for Portugal’s tense 3-1 victory over Turkey on Thursday. Dalot started the World Cup qualifier at right-back and was closely monitored during the match.
