Dutch defender ‘hotly courted’ by Man Utd in triple operation worth more than €100m

Netherlands under-21 international Jeremie Frimpong

Manchester United remain in pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, according to reports – and their hopes of signing him may be on the up.

Right-back is an area that Man Utd might need to address in the summer. Their current options in that department are Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Dalot has been the most frequent starter this season, but his contract is due to expire at the end of next season. That said, optimism is growing that he is close to signing a long-term extension.

In turn, it will end the interest of suitors like Barcelona and guarantee Dalot will prolong his Man Utd career.

As for Wan-Bissaka, though, there are still some elements of doubt. After barely featuring in the first half of the season, he was linked with a January exit, potentially on loan.

But the former Crystal Palace player took advantage of a spell of inactivity from Dalot to finally earn the trust of Ten Hag.

Still, Wan-Bissaka might want to move on in the summer if his gametime decreases again. Therefore, Man Utd are weighing up who they could bring in to ensure they still have enough quality at right-back.

Frimpong is one option they have been looking at. Their interest emerged in October and he remains on their shortlist.

A former Manchester City academy player, Frimpong has been with Bayer Leverkusen since January 2021, when he joined them from Celtic.

According to the latest from Bild, though, he is now being “hotly courted” by Man Utd.

Currently 10th in the Bundesliga and 12 points off the Champions League places, Bayer Leverkusen are having a season to forget, which could force them to sell some big players in the summer.

Frimpong is one of three they have identified – along with Piero Hincapie and Moussa Diaby – who could, put together, bring in more than €100million.

It is not exactly clear in the report how much of that would be made up of Frimpong’s fee. He is under contract with his current club until 2025.

Frimpong could be next Dutch signing at Man Utd

Man Utd could now be preparing a move, though, to add him to their growing Dutch contingent. Ten Hag can already call upon compatriots like Tyrell Malacia and Wout Weghorst.

Frimpong – who has made 72 appearances for his current employers, including 25 this season – could be the next Dutch player to arrive for Ten Hag.

And despite his club not doing so well, the 22-year-old would arrive in decent form personally. He has scored five goals this season in what has been his best scoring campaign.

Obviously, as a right-back, there are other things he needs to be sharp at. But given that Wan-Bissaka’s attacking output has been under scrutiny, Frimpong could be something of an upgrade in that department.
