Regressing Manchester United ace enters ‘advanced talks’ with distant suitor

Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford

Edinson Cavani is in advanced discussions to join Boca Juniors after his Manchester United spell ends, according to a report.

Cavani will become a free agent in the summer, after two seasons at Old Trafford. His second has not been as successful as his first, on a team or individual level.

For his part, injuries and the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo have affected him. He has made just 12 Premier League appearances in the 2021-22 season.

This term, Cavani has just two goals across all competitions, both of which came in the league. It represents a regression from the 17 he managed across the board – including 10 in the top-flight – last term.

After expecting more opportunities, the centre-forward is ready to walk away from Manchester United in the summer. He will not be a part of the new project under incoming manager Erik ten Hag.

But there have been a range of theories as to where Cavani will end up. He could continue his career in Europe or return to South America.

And according to the Daily Mirror, the latter avenue is now looking likely. Per their report, Cavani is in “advanced talks” with Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

They were one of the clubs interested in taking him when he was at a similar crossroads last summer. This time, Cavani will not be staying in Manchester.

European enquiries for Cavani

Boca Juniors have now established themselves as the favourites, even though the report also claims several European clubs have “enquired” about the Paris Saint-Germain record scorer.

None are identified in the report, but previous claims have involved the likes of Real Madrid and Real Sociedad after a preference for a La Liga experience was speculated.

But the Uruguay international could head back to South America instead by signing for Boca Juniors. There are no details of the length or value of any contract that would be on offer for the 35-year-old.

His fate as a Manchester United player appears to be sealed, though. He could join the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard in leaving the club this summer.

Matic has already confirmed he will be leaving one year ahead of schedule, while the others – like Cavani – are out of contract in June.
