Edinson Cavani holds talks with new club over summer move as Man Utd exit ‘edges closer’

Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani is reportedly in talks with a new club over a summer transfer as his Manchester United exit ‘edges closer’.

Cavani has made 17 appearances for the Red Devils this season, registering two goals and one assist. His game time has been hampered by injuries and competition from Cristiano Ronaldo up front.

The Uruguay international appears set to leave Old Trafford once his contract expires in the summer. And there are plenty of sides looking to complete a free transfer swoop.

River Plate hold an interest, as do Italian giants Inter. The Nerazzurri are preparing to go back in for Cavani after failing to land him in 2020.

However, Fabrizio Romano states Cavani’s desire is to feature in La Liga before he retires. Alongside the Premier League, the striker has played in Ligue 1, Serie A and the Uruguayan top flight previously.

Atletico Madrid have been named as potential suitors. But it seems a rival Spanish club is now in the box seat to organise a deal.

Edinson Cavani holds initial transfer talks

According to The Sun, Cavani has held preliminary talks with Real Sociedad over a move to the Anoeta Stadium. The star’s exit from Manchester is now ‘edging closer’, the report claims.

Such a transfer would give the 35-year-old the chance to play at a decent level once again before hanging up his boots. Sociedad are hoping to achieve Europa League qualification this season – they sit sixth after 29 games, two points behind fifth-placed Real Betis.

Sociedad can currently rely on Alexander Isak and Alexander Sorloth up top. Cavani would likely come in to replace Sorloth as the Norwegian is on loan from RB Leipzig this term.

Cavani came off the bench in United’s 3-2 victory over Spurs shortly before the international break. He didn’t make the starting lineup after only recently returning from a groin problem.

Diego Forlan weighs in on Cavani struggles

Compatriot Diego Forlan believes Cavani hasn’t been used effectively when he has been fit to play.

“I think at United if he had the opportunity to play many games in a row, he would have been scoring many, many important goals for the club,” the former striker said recently.

“He did that last season if you remember. At the end he was playing many games before the Europa League final and you could see in the way that many people were behind him, players, and the way he took the team to the next level.

“Why? Because he was playing most of the games. This season he started the season injured and then he didn’t play for one reason or another which I don’t know.

“He never played two or three games in a row and it is difficult for a player to perform well if he doesn’t have many games.”
