Edinson Cavani transfer latest: Agent denies done deal as surprise No 1 focus is named

Edinson Cavani Man Utd striker, warming up before Premier League game against Burnley at Turf Moor

The agent for Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has denied reports the striker has an agreement in place to sign for Boca Juniors this summer.

The veteran Uruguayan striker has seen his role with the Red Devils severely limited this season. His debut season at Old Trafford proved a successful one; Cavani banging in 16 goals and weighing in with five assists. Having flirted with the idea of leaving last season, Cavani was persuaded to stay on the one-year option on his deal.

However, a combination of injuries and the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo has limited the Uruguayan’s game-time this season. Indeed, he has made just seven starts in all competitions, scoring just two goals.

Now in the autumn of his career, that is clearly not enough for a player of his calibre.

And with his contract expiring on June 30, it’s little surprise to see Cavani nearing a move elsewhere.

Having been linked with Barcelona and then Sevilla earlier this year, it appeared Cavani was likely to make LaLiga his next destination.

Boca links dismissed

However, in recent weeks he has been strongly linked with Boca Juniors once again. The Argentine side were close to luring him back to South America last summer.

Those reports have upped a notch in recent days too. To that end, the striker reportedly has an agreement in place, having spurned offers from Palmeiras and Corinthians.

However, Cavani’s brother and agent, Walter Guglielmone, has told El Pais that, as things stand, Cavani is not signing for Boca.

Furthermore, he also claims his brother prefers to play in Europe for a little longer.

“At the moment that is not true… Everything is dynamic. The priority is to continue in Europe,” he said.

Real Sociedad ready to offer Edinson Cavani a one-year deal

With Cavani seemingly intent on staying in Europe, reports now suggest he may be heading instead to Real Sociedad.

Cavani reportedly held talks with Sociedad last month when it first became apparent he was leaving Old Trafford.

Imanol Alguacil’s side are currently sixth in LaLiga and look well placed to secure European football.

That will likely prove a big lure for Cavani, who will surely relish the chance to play in LaLiga.

Cavani leaving United and heading for La Liga

Cavani will leave Manchester United this summer and looks likely to move to La Liga with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both rumoured

The Basque side have lost just eight games this season – one fewer than 2021 champions Atletico Madrid.

He will also be tempted by the chance to play alongside one of LaLiga’s best young talents in Alexander Isak.

The Sweden striker has struggled to hit the heights this season, but would only benefit from having a striker of Cavani’s experience alongside him.

Cavani currently has 19 goals in 57 appearances for Manchester United.
