Man Utd thrash out agreement to offload unsettled centre-back, with winners of transfer battle revealed

Axel Tuanzebe being subbed on for Eric Bailly

Manchester United have agreed to send defender Eric Bailly on loan to a Ligue 1 side with Champions League football on offer, according to reports in France.

It has seemed clear for most of the summer that Bailly will be on his way out of Manchester United during this transfer window. The only question has been where exactly he will end up. There have been links with clubs in England, Italy, Spain and France.

At any destination, Bailly would be hoping to get more gametime than he has managed at Manchester United. Despite signing a contract extension last year, he has not played much since.

The addition of Lisandro Martinez, despite a questionable start to his Manchester United career, has pushed Bailly further down the pecking order. Hence, he now wants out of Old Trafford.

And it appears he is close to getting his way. According to La Provence, Bailly is on the verge of joining Marseille after they reached an agreement with Manchester United.

The loan deal, according to La Provence, will contain an option to buy that is likely to become an obligation. It will hinge on how many matches he plays for them and whether they qualify for the Champions League again, like they have for the current campaign.

The report claims that Marseille are optimistic of finalising the move by the end of the weekend. If there are any further delays, they may move on to other targets – but it sounds like they might not need to.

Still, they would need to find an agreement with Bailly over his contract for future seasons if he becomes a permanent Marseille player.

But these are the final hurdles of their pursuit, so the finishing line could be in sight. It would bring an end to six years as a Manchester United player for Bailly, who has never played for a Ligue 1 club before but is seemingly about to get that chance.

Marseille move makes sense for Eric Bailly

Choosing Marseille as his next destination could be wise by Bailly. He will likely get more opportunities to play than he has at Manchester United.

Besides, it will be at a good standard; Marseille are able to offer what the Red Devils currently cannot with Champions League involvement.

At the age of 28, it will be important for Bailly to feel like a key player somewhere. Marseille can give him that platform, so he should take them seriously.

These are supposed to be his prime years that he will be committing with his next contract. Therefore, he will be hoping to thrive if he does put pen to paper on terms with Marseille.
