Erik ten Hag and his new senior Manchester United colleagues met in Amsterdam on Thursday for a crunch meeting, a report has claimed.
The Red Devils are finally coming to the end of a lacklustre season but have an exciting new chapter ahead. Last month, the club announced Dutchman Ten Hag as their new manager from next season.
In between then and now, though, the 52-year-old has had to remain focused on Ajax’s push for the Eredivisie title.
However, the Dutch giants clinched the third league triumph of Ten Hag’s four-and-a-half-year reign on Wednesday.
As such, The Telegraph claims that the manager has subsequently got straight to work planning for next season.
Ten Hag, Steve McClaren, Mitchell van der Gaag and John Murtough all met in Amsterdam on Thursday to talk United’s strategy going forwards.
Old Trafford football director Murtough went through the transfer plans the club already had in mind for this summer.
Van der Gaag is currently Ten Hag’s assistant in the Ajax dugout. However, Ten Hag wants his fellow Dutchman to follow him to Manchester.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed on Tuesday that Man Utd are ‘working on the details’ of a contract for the 50-year-old.
As for McClaren, reports in April claimed that Ten Hag wants the former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson back at United. The pair worked together at FC Twente in the 2008/09 campaign.
And he was present at the Amsterdam meeting, with The Telegraph subsequently claiming he will too become a key part of Ten Hag’s staff.
Ten Hag discusses Man Utd transfers
As for the transfer action the quartet discussed, midfield signings were high on the agenda.
Ten Hag wants two new Man Utd signings in that area, with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard all leaving in the summer.
Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong is a key target for the new manager. The duo formed a strong relationship at Ajax, with De Jong starring in the team that made it to the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.
Ten Hag is also looking at a ‘versatile forward’ and a new centre-back, the newspaper report adds.
Man Utd need reinvigorating
But before the incoming coach can think about adding fresh signings to his new team, he must first turn the morale of the current squad around.
Last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat away to Brighton was another sad indictment of the poor form at United this season.

They have also lost 9-0 on aggregate to Liverpool this season in just three of the results which have played a part in the criticism facing the club.
While several players are on their way out, Ten Hag must first look at reinvigorating the rest of the squad.
