Ten Hag identifies area where Man Utd have ‘really improved’ before explaining excitement for Antony, Rashford link-up

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United have already ‘really improved’ on their mentality after their team spirit helped them to defeat Arsenal.

Manchester United picked up a fourth consecutive win in the Premier League by beating Arsenal 3-1 at Old Trafford. In doing so, they became the first team to take points off the league leaders this season.

Antony scored a goal on his debut after going straight into Ten Hag’s starting lineup. He was slid through in the 35th minute by Marcus Rashford before finishing with his left foot across the goalkeeper.

Rashford made it a memorable afternoon for himself further by scoring Manchester United’s next two goals after a leveller from Bukayo Saka.

This time, there was to be no way back for the Gunners, as a confident-looking Manchester United side kept hold of all three points to go fifth in the formative Premier League table.

According to Ten Hag, the Red Devils are dealing better with setbacks, although there are still areas to improve.

The manager told Match of the Day: “We are happy and satisfied with the win, also the performance against a really good team. They played really well.

“The spirit from this team, they can deal with setbacks so we did. It is really great and shows your mentality – we have really improved on that.

“We have the right characters and now it is about cooperation, deal with setbacks but also improve. We have to stay calm, stay composed and play our game.

“You can see that Arsenal are more together, more routines – but our team spirit brings us the win.

“We can still do things better, with pressing, we had a good plan but the incoming from Zinchenko for instance, that gives them overnumbering in midfield. We can be more composed on the ball, don’t give it away.

“When we got beat in the press we fought back and recovered, especially in transitions we were good.”

Erik ten Hag encouraged by Antony, Rashford combinations

Ten Hag was also satisfied with the contributions of both his goalscorers. Antony was impactful on debut and Rashford played a part in all three goals.

Of the duo, the Dutchman said: “They both played great, a continual threat. I know our offensive is really strong; they are creative and have speed.

“This is the first time they have played together and this performance is great to see.”

Manchester United are next in action when they host Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday. It will be their first match of this season’s group stage.
