‘Step forward’ – Man Utd issued warning about managerial candidate by club legend Jaap Stam

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Ten Hag

Manchester United have been issued a warning about managerial candidate Erik Ten Hag by club legend Jaap Stam.

Ten Hag is one of the frontrunners for the vacancy at Old Trafford. It seems he has Ralf Rangnick’s seal of approval. And he is said to be keen on leaving Ajax to take on the task of rejuvenating the Red Devils.

However, PSG’s Mauricio Pochettino is a strong rival for the role. And he is a much more experienced option.

That could scupper Ten Hag’s chances, with former United defender Stam the latest to suggest his CV could be an issue.

“Ten Hag is doing very well at Ajax; he makes the team a difficult opponent for everyone in Europe and Holland,” he told Sky Sports Italy (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“He is very good at showing the players what to do and also at improving individual players.

“At Ajax, he obviously has the finances to grow the team with young players.

“For him, Man United would be another thing compared to what he is experiencing in Holland. He has to take this step forward in his career.”

Whoever takes the job, Stam believes they must rely on Cristiano Ronaldo to fire them back to the top of the table.

Juan Mata continues to be on the fringes at Manchester United and his contract runs out this summer. However, he could yet stay at Old Trafford in a coaching role.

Ronaldo the key – Stam

He added: “Ronaldo didn’t play in the derby, then scored three goals against Tottenham. It’s always difficult to understand what goes on in a dressing room, but Ronaldo showed his strength.

“You have to involve someone like him in decisions; you have to talk to him. He’s fundamental for the locker room; he helps you raise the level of the team.

“At Man United, they don’t always play well, they should dominate games more, and in my opinion, I think they should do more.

“I hope the club will make better choices next season; they need to get back to the top.”

Ten Hag doubts build

Another ex-United star, Louis Saha, has raised major question marks over Ten Hag too.

“He has quality for sure, the Dutch people are very knowledgeable about football,” Saha told Metro.co.uk.

“But I’m sorry, it is a different animal. Ajax is a trampoline for big clubs. They are respected in world football but they are not in that league. This is not Milan or Real Madrid.

“I am sure that most of the players would not know him. Managing this club is a different thing. We have seen some big names come in and they didn’t make it.

“Jose Mourinho is one of the biggest in world football, he brought results in terms of winning trophies but we claim it was an unsuccessful spell.”
