Euro Paper Talk: Man Utd get to work on £13m striker deal with ‘huge potential

Hugo Ekitike, Reims v Nantes September 2021

Manchester United begin the groundwork over a transfer for an exciting striker, while Arsenal have had contact over a winger deal – both in all the latest Euro Paper Talk.

MAN UTD WANT HUGO EKITIKE

Manchester United have made an initial approach to find out what plans Reims striker Hugo Ekitike has for next season, according to a report.

United are after a striker this summer as they look to refresh their ranks up front. Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Odion Ighalo are their three previous signings in that area, with all 30 or above when they joined.

While Cavani, 35, has dropped off this season due to injury, 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo is still going strong. Nevertheless, Cavani is leaving this summer and Ronaldo is moving closer to his career’s end.

As a result, interim Man Utd boss Ralf Rangnick recently called on the club to sign two “modern strikers”.

And according to ESPN, Reims’ France Under-20 international Ekitike is now on United’s radar. Indeed, club chiefs have approached the 19-year-old’s representatives.

While a potential deal remains in its infancy after the first enquiry, United – alongside the other clubs showing interest in him – believe Ekitike has ‘huge potential’.

Newcastle came close to signing the striker in January. They reportedly had a bid worth £25million, rising to £33million, accepted by Reims but rejected by the player.

However, Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot said recently that Ekitike is “probably going to leave” in this summer’s transfer window. ESPN adds that he will be available for €15million (£13million).

Hugo Ekitike would be a great signing for Manchester United

Manchester United have been the latest club to be linked with French youngster Hugo Ekitike.

As well as United and Newcastle, Bayern Munich and Arsenal are eyeing up a move for Ekitike to bolster their ranks.

The Gunners let Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang go in January, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah likely to follow suit this summer.

Ekitike is still out with a hamstring injury he suffered in February. Overall this season, he has scored 10 goals in 24 games.
