Former Man Utd star begs Ten Hag to sign ‘proven’ striker who can finally replace Cristiano Ronaldo

Ex-Manchester United player Dion Dublin has urged his former club to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer.

The Red Devils have been on the hunt for a new centre-forward since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November, despite the excellent form of Marcus Rashford.

Indeed, while Rashford has helped fire Man Utd into the top four, he could certainly do with some quality support like Toney alongside him next season.

Now, Dublin has insisted that the Brentford star would make for a great addition to Ten Hag’s frontline amid an impressive campaign.

The ex-striker turned Homes Under the Hammer presenter insists Toney would ‘only get better’ if he made the switch to Old Trafford.

The England international has registered 19 goals in 30 Premier League appearances this term – trailing only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland in the scoring charts.

In a recent interview, Dublin said: “In my opinion [Toney] is good enough to go and play for Manchester United, and I think he’d only get better if he went there.

“Erik ten Hag likes a big striker and they need a proven goal-scorer so maybe they should take a look at Ivan Toney.”

Signing Toney could be a risk for Man Utd

However, while there is no doubting Toney’s ability – the controversy surrounding him could make signing him a risk.

In November, the 27-year-old was charged with 232 alleged betting breaches between 2017 and 2021, and another 30 a month later.

The 27-year-old admitted to many of the charges, but contested others, and could be banned for a minimum of six months.

As a result, Ten Hag could potentially be put off making a move for Toney.

Interestingly, Newcastle recently decided against resigning the Brentford star, although it is unclear why Eddie Howe made that decision.

Nevertheless, Man Utd continue to look for a new striker and have also been linked with the likes of Tottenham captain Harry Kane and Napoli goal machine Victor Osimhen in recent weeks.

Kane will reportedly be available for a fee of £88m this summer, so the Red Devils will have to put their money where their mouth is to get a deal over the line.

But, more recent reports suggest that Osimhen would be Ten Hag’s preferred option – after allegedly ‘ordering’ the club’s hierarchy to do everything they can to bring him in.

Representatives of Man Utd were in Naples on Wednesday for the Serie A leaders’ Champions League quarter-final against AC Milan.

And, although Napoli crashed out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate, Osimhen was on target in the second leg, which ended 1-1.

That goal made it a hugely impressive 26 goals in 31 games this season. If he could continue that form in the Premier League under Ten Hag, Osimhen could potentially turn Man Utd into title contenders again.
