EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd block fresh exit for star but deliver big caveat to Nottingham Forest

Man Utd loanee James Garner alongside Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Nottingham Forest have already been told by Manchester United that James Garner will be returning to Old Trafford this summer, TEAMtalk understands.

Midfielder Garner has impressed during what is a second loan spell at the City Ground, having also spent time at Watford. Indeed, the 21-year-old has scored four times in 38 appearances for the club in all competitions.

We understand that Forest had already enquired with United about Garner coming back – whether they were promoted or not. Steve Cooper’s men are currently fifth in the table, eight points off automatic promotion.

But with the young midfielder doing well, United are ready to bring him back into the first-team fold and give him a chance.

However, United’s youth hierarchy have made it clear they have been delighted with Forest’s handling of Garner. To that end, they are willing to send more of their top young talents to the City Ground in the future.

As for Garner, he will be given the chance to impress new incoming boss Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is closing in on the Old Trafford job and will replace interim chief Ralf Rangnick this summer.

The current Ajax boss is set to access the current first-team squad, as well as those players on the fringes of it, before determining who stays and who goes.

Garner’s hopes may be boosted if, as expected, Paul Pogba ends up moving on a free transfer.

The Red Devils star is being for a return to Juventus, although PSG have now come in with a ‘curious’ offer.

Ten Hag could also decide to move on from other aging United stars as he looks to bring youth and more energy to the side – something his Ajax teams are famed for.

United are back in action on Saturday lunchtime when they head to struggling Everton in the Premier League. Garner and Forest, meanwhile, have a home game against Birmingham.
