Fabrizio Romano confirms Man Utd have held ‘direct meeting’ over £31m Bundesliga swoop, but two transfer rivals emerge

Jeremie Frimpong and Raphael Guerreiro, Leverkusen vs Dortmund

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Manchester United have held talks over the capture of a Bundesliga right-back, although they will face competition from two of Europe’s biggest clubs for his services.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag can currently rely on Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right side of defence. Dalot has generally been used ahead of Wan-Bissaka, having picked up 34 appearances across all competitions so far. In that time, the Portugal international has notched one goal and three assists.

Wan-Bissaka did gain a few starts in the Premier League between late December and early February. However, Ten Hag has since gone back to Dalot as his main right-back.

Man Utd spent £50million when signing Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace in July 2019, while they had also invested £19m in Dalot the previous summer. But neither full-back has done enough to properly earn Ten Hag’s trust and Man Utd are therefore expected to sign a new player in the position during the next transfer window.

Man Utd are known to be admirers of Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries. However, with the 26-year-old also picking up interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, Man Utd have had to look at alternative options.

One player they very much like the look of is Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. He is proving to be a menace for opposition defenders in the Bundesliga, having registered eight goals and five assists while operating as a right wing-back. That means Frimpong actually has a better record this season than Dumfries, despite the latter being known for his attacking output.

Ten Hag believes Frimpong would be able to add more threat and goal contributions to his team and this has resulted in Man Utd setting their sights on the 22-year-old.

On Tuesday, Sky Sport Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed that Man Utd have held discussions with Frimpong’s agent, Jeffrey Lemmert. Plettenberg described the talks as being ‘very positive’ and explained that Frimpong is ‘open’ to leaving Leverkusen this summer.

Fabrizio Romano discusses Man Utd move

And Romano has now confirmed that Man Utd have begun initial negotiations over Frimpong’s move to Old Trafford. He states that Man Utd and Lemmert have held a ‘direct meeting’.

The only trouble for the Red Devils is that they are not alone in pursuing the Dutchman. Romano writes that Bayern Munich and Barcelona have also been in contact with the representative.

Bayern have identified Frimpong as an alternative right-back to Joao Cancelo. Bayern have signed Cancelo on loan from Manchester City and have the option to buy him this summer for €70m (£61.5m). But the reigning Bundesliga champions do not want to pay this much for a new right-back, and Frimpong represents a far cheaper option. transfermarkt put his valuation at €35m (£31m).

Romano goes on to briefly discuss Barca’s situation in the transfer pursuit. He writes that it is currently ‘unclear’ whether Xavi will have the necessary funds to land Frimpong due to Financial Fair Play regulations.

If Barca manage to alleviate some of their transfer difficulties by selling some big-name players, then Frimpong will be chased. But if not, then Barca will have to admit defeat to either Man Utd or Bayern.

Bayern and Barca are two massive clubs who have big pulling power for players. Due to this, Man Utd will have to put on a real charm offensive to get to him first.

Ten Hag will be confident about doing that though. He is Frimpong’s compatriot and he will resultantly try to use this to create a good relationship with the star.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are being tipped to beat Tottenham to the signing of a Man Utd player.
