Frenkie de Jong update: Fabrizio Romano delivers decisive Man Utd news involving top Ten Hag target

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has delivered a decisive update on Manchester United’s slim chances of signing midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the January transfer window.

The Barcelona star has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford for seemingly the whole of 2022, with his Nou Camp future looking decidedly unclear.

Indeed, earlier in the current campaign it looked as if a move to Manchester was very much on.

De Jong was not starting regularly and his relationship with Barca boss Xavi was not particularly great.

However, things have since turned around and the 25-year-old, who has also been linked with Liverpool, now looks happier than ever in Catalonia.

De Jong also has a contract that runs until the summer of 2026, meaning Barcelona are in no real hurry to sell.

However, if that remains their ultimate goal then doing so sooner rather than later represents the best chance to maximise the player’s value.

And while that still gives United a shot at a transfer, Romano is not convinced it will happen in January.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, he said: “For January, I think it is almost impossible, but for the summer it depends on the player, because Frenkie de Jong has always said no to any move. It’s not just to Manchester United, he decided to stay at Barcelona, he’s happy at Barcelona.

“If Frenkie changes his mind, then we will see.”

Duo showing their class in United midfield

De Jong would certainly be a superb addition to United’s midfield. However, it would also be harsh to mess with the current dynamic of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

The veteran pair have been in excellent form in Erik ten Hag’s engine room. Although a player like De Jong, at five years younger, would certainly add more youthful zest.

The Barca star has impressed for the Netherlands at the World Cup so far. Indeed, he’s been showing United fans what they could have.

But it appears that a wait until the summer and then a rethink from the player needs to happen first.

Ten Hag’s men are back in action on December 21 when they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup.
