Fabrizio Romano has revaled how much it will take to land Martin Terrier with Manchester United looking to fend off several clubs for the in-demand French striker.

Terrier had his most prolific season to date in Ligue 1 last season and he has started this campaign well for Rennes.

Throughout the 2021-22 campaign, the 25-year-old scored 21 league goals, which was only topped by Wissam Ben Yedder and Kylian Mbappe.

Terrier himself is fairly versatile as he can play in several positions. For the most part during this season he has been utilised on the left-hand side.

Rennes typically lineup in a 4-4-2 formation and Terrier has predominantly occupied the role on the left. He is also comfortable with playing through the middle as a number nine or in a more creative role.

In his first 18 appearances this season he already has 15 goal contributions across all competitions.

Rennes currently sit second in Group B of the Europa League and have already qualified for the next round. The French side are also third in Ligue 1 and have enjoyed a positive start to the season.

Fabrizio Romano details his price tag

According to Romano, it would take a fee of around £39m – £43.3m (€45-50million) for Rennes to be tempted to sell their prized asset.

Romano explained in a column for CaughtOffside: “What a season Martin Terrier is having, and it’s inevitably led to links with Premier League clubs in recent times, but what’s the truth?

“He’s doing fantastic, and so there are always scouts following him from English clubs and also Serie A clubs.

“Sources close to Rennes guarantee they’d ask for €45-50m for Terrier, but nothing is happening yet. I think he’ll have a fair few options. But it’s too early to say anything concrete on his future right now.”

Given their positive start to the season, Rennes will be keen to keep Terrier around. His current deal with Rennes runs until the summer of 2026. As this is the case, they are in no rush to sell him as things stand.

Erik ten Hag is keen to add to Man United’s attacking options though and Terrier could be a savvy purchase.

Leeds interest makes sense

Given how much turnover Leeds had throughout the summer, it makes sense that they targeted a player like Terrier. At 25 years old, he fits into the age profile that they tend to target.

According to a report from 90min: ‘Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds all contacted Rennes in the summer, but talks didn’t amount to any official bids for the player.’

Instead, Terrier decided to commit his future to Rennes as he signed a new contract until the summer of 2026.

The Frenchman’s new deal hasn’t deterred any of the interested parties though. According to the same report Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle, Leeds, Leicester, Wolves and Aston Villa have all watched him in action across the last two weeks.

Leeds victory against Liverpool gave their survival chances a huge boost, but they could certainly do with some January reinforcements.

Jesse Marsch’s side have averaged 1.25 goals per game and so they could do with some more firepower.

Given how much money is currently sloshing around in the Premier League, you would imagine a few clubs would be willing to pay that price tag. Clubs from Germany and Italy are also keeping tabs on the player.

Newcastle are tough to turn down

It’s no secret that Newcastle are probably one of the most attractive Premier League clubs to join right now.

Eddie Howe currently has his side sat in the top four and they have made great progress since his arrival.

Given the financial backing that Newcastle now have, they would also be able to match any offer from any other Premier League side.

Newcastle also have quite the track record when it comes to scouting players from the French league. Sven Botman, Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin are all recent examples of players they have picked up from Ligue 1.

As they are yet to have seen the best from Alexander Isak, Howe will be keen to add more depth into the attacking areas of his squad.

If they do manage to secure European football this season, their ability to attract players from around Europe will grow exponentially.

Given all the clubs that are interested in Terrier, he certainly won’t be short of options.
