Frenkie de Jong: Man Utd told two reasons why star wants Chelsea as Erik ten Hag learns of sky-high fee for alternative

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Frenkie de Jong appear to be fading by the hour after a report outlined the two major reasons why the Barcelona star strongly favours a move to Chelsea instead.

United boss Erik ten Hag has chased De Jong long and hard all summer. Having identified United’s midfield as an area of weakness, he wants a reunion with his former Ajax protege to fix the issue. But securing his signing has proven far tougher than Ten Hag or United ever realised.

Agreeing a fee with Barcelona was an arduous process enough. However, after days of negotiations, United and Barcelona finally struck on a deal worth in the region of £73m.

That, though, was only half the battle as far as United were concerned. Indeed, convincing the player to make the switch has also been anything but easy. And with a report outlining 10 reasons why De Jong is willing to snub United, perhaps the writing has long been on the wall.

Ten Hag, though, has steadfastly refused to give up. And amid claims that Chelsea were ready to launch a counter offer for his services, the United boss has remained a figure of positivity. Indeed, a report as recently as Tuesday evening suggested Ten Hag remains confident at securing his signature following a personal chat with the player.

Since then, though, Chelsea have seemingly engineered themselves to the front of the queue. They are ready to match United’s offer to Barcelona and now Metro has listed two reasons why De Jong is more likely to sign for the Blues.

Man Utd learn high costs needed for Ruben Neves

First of all, they can offer the player the Champions League football he craves. United are only in the Europa League and they are far from certain to return to Europe’s top table by the end of this campaign.

Furthermore, the player is said to have some appeal at living in London. Both himself and his partner Mikky Kiemeney are reportedly opposed to relocating to Manchester. But a life in the English capital reportedly holds much more sway with the player.

As a result, United are reportedly now considering all other options after seemingly realising their De Jong hopes are fading.

Top of their list of alternatives is Wolves star Ruben Neves.

However, his signing will not come cheap with the Black Country side reportedly extremely reluctant to let him leave. And while his deal has two years left to run, they are reportedly sticking a prohibitive £75m asking price on his head.

That deal would actually surpasse the amount United agreed to pay for De Jong. And while they will hope to drive down the price, Wolves seemingly look determined to retain the Portuguese star’s services.

The likes of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Youri Tielemans have also been mentioned as potential alternatives.

United need to move on quickly from Frenkie de Jong saga

Having chased him all summer, missing Frenkie de Jong now will certainly come as a major blow for Manchester United.

As a result, the pressure will now be on the club to deliver a top-class alternative for Ten Hag too.

The Dutchman probably felt United’s name alone and his connections would be enough to seal his signing. And while that may still prove the case, surely the club will feel that too much time has been spent pursuing this deal.

Of the alternatives, Tielemans perhaps seems the easiest to obtain. He has the passing range and midfield control similar to what De Jong can offer.

But with just a year left on his deal, he would cost a fraction of the price. Like Neves, the Belgian is also capable of adding goals from midfield too.

Frenkie de Jong doesn't want Man Utd move

Frenkie de Jong has reportedly told Erik ten Hag he doesn’t want to join Manchester United.

Having scored Leicester’s FA Cup final winner in 2021, Tielemans scored six goals and added four assists last season.

At 25 too, he’s now yet reached his peak either. However, once again United will have to act fast to get a deal done. That’s because Arsenal are reportedly set to launch an opening bid of their own.

United, meanwhile, are reportedly stepping up their hunt for Benjamin Sesko, while the club are also looking into a bargain deal for a Barcelona defender.
