Frenkie de Jong: Man Utd frustrations grow as key bewilderment emerges over Barcelona transfer saga

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United have reportedly become increasingly frustrated with the delay over the Frenkie de Jong transfer, pointing the finger at Barcelona’s antics.

The Red Devils have chased a deal for the Netherlands midfielder for several weeks now without significant progress. They may have agreed a deal with Barca – but that has proved the easy bit.

Indeed, De Jong wants to stay at Barcelona – and would prefer to move elsewhere if he does leave.

But the 25-year-old’s deferred wages worth €17million are the deal’s biggest hold-up.

The Manchester Evening News now reports that the continued delay in the deal is growing Man Utd’s frustrations.

And United cannot believe that they are being viewed by some as the ‘dysfunctional club’ in the saga. The Red Devils are insistent that it is Barcelona who are making the transfer more of a saga than it should be.

The report claims Man Utd have agreed a deal worth a total of £71.5million for De Jong. They think it is now up to Barcelona to get their act together and sort his wages out.

For their part, the Red Devils are willing to back Ten Hag as he feels the midfielder is his top target.

Man Utd eager to get De Jong

The pair worked together at Ajax, helping lead the club to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.

That run led to Barcelona paying a big-money fee to bring De Jong to Camp Nou.

While he has had his moments at Barca, he has not maintained his top form consistently. And with new signing Franck Kessie coming in alongside the likes of Gavi and Pedri, the La Liga club are not against De Jong leaving.

United, on the other hand, are short of top midfielders having lost four players in that area over the summer.

The Manchester Evening News adds that United do not feel their other midfield targets will be as successful as De Jong would at the club.

United just need to wait

United just need to wait as the De Jong situation will soon come to a head.

Indeed, Barcelona have a deadline by which to register their new signings. As well as Kessie, other top captures include Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christensen.

Frenkie de Jong has reportedly told Erik ten Hag he doesn’t want to join Manchester United.

But without a big sale – with Barcelona viewing De Jong as their most lucrative available asset – they cannot proceed.

As such, the situation will soon reach a conclusion one way or the other.
