Frenkie de Jong ‘flattered’ by Man Utd transfer rumours but delivers blow to Red Devils with latest comments

Manchester United midfield target Frenkie de Jong admits he is ‘flattered’ by reports linking him with a move to Old Trafford, although he has also cast doubt that a potential switch will go ahead.

Reports on the Barcelona star’s future are rife. Some claim Manchester United have agreed a deal for his signature, while others state there is still work to be done by Erik ten Hag’s side.

The Netherlands international could cost Manchester United anywhere in the region of £70million-90m. Barcelona paid Ajax £65m for him in 2019 and obviously want to make a profit on this.

De Jong is an important part of Xavi’s plans at the Nou Camp. But their financial struggles mean a sale this summer is likely.

Ten Hag’s great relationship with De Jong is pushing the deal towards completion. The 25-year-old doesn’t want to drop out of Champions League competition but is also hoping to play under his former Ajax boss once again.

De Jong is currently on international duty with Holland. They beat Wales 3-2 on Tuesday, in their final Nations League match this month.

During his time with the national team, De Jong has been asked about his club future several times. His most recent reply is (via Manchester Evening News): “You are always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player.

“But I think I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and feel fine there so there is no news.”

Frenkie de Jong hits United with double-edged sword

De Jong’s ‘flattered’ comment suggests he would be open to joining United ahead of next season. They might not be the superpower they once were, but it is still a great opportunity to play there. That is especially the case now Ten Hag is in charge.

However, De Jong is thoroughly enjoying his time at Barca and this could see him reject United’s advances.

The Spanish club were in a bad place under Ronald Koeman but Xavi came in and turned things around. They went on to finish second in La Liga, behind Real Madrid.

Manchester United have hope with signing Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona but Champions League is a massive factor

Barca will be hoping to compete for the league title next season. This is another reason De Jong may want to stay in Spain.

De Jong’s latest admission is a kind of double-edged sword for United. They have been given some encouragement from it. However, the club will also need to convince De Jong to drop into the Europa League if a transfer is to go through.

Meanwhile, United and Chelsea apparently hold an interest in a Real Madrid star.
