Manchester United transfer news: PSG pose threat to Red Devils’ Frenkie De Jong hopes in £68million deal

Paris Saint-Germain are ‘attentive’ of Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong’s situation as Barcelona look to sell their star, according to a report.

De Jong has been a stand-out player for Barcelona over the three years he has been at the club. Barca’s recent financial turmoil and the sudden rise of wonderkids Pedri and Gavi, has, however, thrown his future up in the air.

The Netherlands international joined Barca from Ajax for a fee of around £64million. This came just after their astonishing Champions League run in the 2018/19 season.

Since joining the club, the midfielder has appeared 140 times in all competitions, contributing to a total of 30 goals. These comprise of 13 strikes and 17 assists.

Due to Barcelona’s recent financial troubles, however, the 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Spanish giants.

The Red Devils have been the team most heavily linked with the signing of De Jong. This interest has been heightened since the arrival of Erik ten Hag.

A report from , however, has outlined that Manchester United will have a battle on their hands if they wish to acquire his services. This is because PSG have reportedly remained ‘attentive’ over De Jong’s situation.

He is also available for a fee of around £68m, the report claims. This isn’t a problem for PSG, as shown by the expensive talent in their squad.

The report states that the French club have already tried to sign him once but, alas, that didn’t prevail.

Now, on the hunt to bolster their midfield ranks, PSG would like to throw their hat in the ring for his transfer. Both Le Parisien and the Footmercato have also confirmed these rumours.

Why PSG want Frenkie de Jong

The report also claims that the main priority of PSG’s sporting director, Luis Campos, is to improve their midfield.

The club signed Gigi Wijnaldum from Liverpool on a free transfer last summer after the midfielder’s contract with the Reds ran out.

Marco Veratti is Wijnaldum’s usual partner and the pair have performed well together throughout the campaign.

Outside of this pair, however, their midfield options have much less quality. Last summer, PSG acquired most of their signings on free transfer bolstering their attacking and defensive ranks. They have also just extended the contract of Kylian Mbappe until 2025.

The French club must improve their midfield if they want to win the seemingly elusive Champions League title in the 2022/23 season.

The club have been trying to gain the most prestigious trophy in European football for years but have always seemed to fall short.

If they acquire players with as much talent as De Jong this summer, they will likely be an unstoppable force.
