Frenkie de Jong twist, as former Man Utd player insists club ‘know’ Barcelona star wants to join them

Frenkie de Jong does actually want to join Manchester United, or else the club wouldn’t have been chasing him for so long, one former player has claimed.

De Jong has been Manchester United’s main target for the bulk of the summer transfer window. However, there has been little progress in bringing him in from Barcelona. Indeed, the club have brought in three senior players before him already.

There have been several doubts as to whether De Jong would want to join Manchester United. He is currently at Barcelona, who as usual have Champions League football on offer. His suitors at Old Trafford cannot match that.

However, making the move to Manchester would allow De Jong to reunite with his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag. Furthermore, there would likely be a regular starting spot for him in midfield, since he would be an upgrade on Scott McTominay and Fred.

De Jong has also been linked with other suitors, such as Chelsea. Hence, there may be some concerns from Manchester United that their efforts will be in vain.

But one man who does not think so is De Jong’s Dutch compatriot and former Man Utd player, Jaap Stam. Indeed, the ex-defender believes the club know that their target wants to join them, hence their long-term pursuit.

Stam told Viaplay: “My feeling is that Frenkie de Jong will come here.

“At (Manchester United) they know for a long time that Frenkie de Jong wants to come otherwise they would never push this long to get it done. It’s just a money issue for now.”

The money issue may well be related to the outstanding payments that De Jong is owed by Barcelona. It seems to be holding up any move away from the club, to whichever destination.

Time ticking for Man Utd to get Frenkie de Jong

If that scenario is cleared up, then perhaps Man Utd can still be in with a chance of signing the 25-year-old.

Still, time is ticking if they are to get their man. The transfer window will close on September 1.

United cannot really afford to go without a midfield signing by then. They lost Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard over the summer.

Christian Eriksen is the only midfielder they have brought in since. He favours more attacking territory, so perhaps someone for one of the deeper roles would be beneficial.

The Red Devils will be hoping their persistence can pay off when it comes to De Jong. They have put a lot of time and effort into chasing him, so it would not look good if they missed out.

Whether Stam’s prediction comes true, only time will tell.
