Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has spoken about the four signings the club must make to improve under Erik ten Hag.
As always, the Red Devils have been linked with plenty of players for the summer transfer window. But they are yet to announce any new arrivals amid fierce competition from other teams.
Manchester United are admirers of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez. They are in contact with his agent, but the 22-year-old is on the verge of joining Liverpool.
Fabrizio Romano states Liverpool have agreed a deal worth £85.3million to sign Nunez. This will make him the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, and fourth on the Premier League list.
United’s first signing could be Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong. Barcelona are keen to keep hold of him, but Ten Hag wants to reunite with his former Ajax player.
The Guardian claim United have bid an initial £51.3m, plus £8.5m in bonuses, although this has been rejected. Barca will only sell if their £72m valuation is met.
Neville will clearly want the Manchester outfit to sign De Jong, as he believes central midfield is one of four positions that needs improving while the window is open.
During an interview with club media, the former right-back said: “We know the areas they absolutely need to actually strengthen. Central midfield is an absolute necessity. An absolute necessity.
Manchester United need midfielders – Gary Neville
“Manchester United need midfield players. They also need a centre-forward. I know Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to stay and he’s an absolutely brilliant performer, but they need a centre-forward. Centre-forward is a must.
“I think there’ll need to be a wide player, just to beef up the squad, and I think full-backs are absolutely critical in the modern game. [There are] four full-backs there, it’ll be interesting to see which two, three or four of those are liked.”
A new right-back could arrive at Old Trafford this summer as United are willing to let Aaron Wan-Bissaka go.
Crystal Palace want to re-sign the Englishman but would only be able to afford a loan move.
The addition of a new right-back could depend on how much money United have left after the potential De Jong deal.
If there is little left in the pot, then Ten Hag may stick with Diogo Dalot after his decent displays during the last campaign.
With Edinson Cavani gone, United certainly do need a new striker to provide backup for Ronaldo. But Nunez is going to an arch rival, meaning a new target needs to be found.
This is a huge summer for the Red Devils as they must back Ten Hag to help him become successful in his first season in charge.
The club must also bolster the squad as the likes of Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are all leaving.
Meanwhile, United are reportedly in a bidding war with Barcelona for an impressive Premier League midfielder.
