Former Premier League midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was reportedly eager to return to England with Manchester United, though Erik ten Hag did not want him.
Wijnaldum played in England for six seasons from 2015/16 to 2020/21 with Newcastle United and then Liverpool. His most successful season in terms of personal success was with the Magpies.
That was his first season in England, when he bagged 11 league goals and provided five assists. Newcastle were relegated at the end of the 2015/16 season, and Wijnaldum was sold to Liverpool for £24.75million in the summer.
The Dutchman enjoyed a good deal of team success with the Reds. Indeed, he won the Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup with Liverpool.
He played a big role in Jurgen Klopp’s side during his time at the club. Wijnaldum racked up 237 appearances, and missed just one game in each of the triumphant Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
What’s more, he notched two goals in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona to help Liverpool to the final. Clearly, the midfielder’s time in England was a success.
Since he left for Paris Saint-Germain last summer, his career has stagnated somewhat. While the French giants won the league last term, Wijnaldum started just 18 league games, and was frequently linked with a move away.
The midfielder has now made a move away from Paris, after joining just over a year ago. He has been loaned to Roma until the end of the season.
However, Wijnaldum could have made a move back to the Premier League, according to Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol.
“The player was willing to move to Manchester United,” he said.
Ten Hag dismissed Wijnaldum transfer
Wijnaldum could have joined up with compatriot Ten Hag, who became United manager over the summer. However, it was his intervention that stopped the move from happening.
“I’ve been told that United were offered the chance to sign the player, who has won the title with Liverpool and Champions League,” Solhekol added.
“But Erik ten Hag didn’t want him.”
It seems strange that the United boss would turn down the opportunity to sign a player who was so effective in England previously. Especially given United have lost Paul Pogba, who operates in the same areas.
However, the manager may have been prioritising another midfield signing. The Red Devils have been linked with Frenkie de Jong and Adrien Rabiot.
